Stephan Paul: Hearing Research at the Vibration and Acoustics Lab at Federal University of Santa Catarina

15. Juli 2019 | von

Hearing is an essential input for human communication and its loss causes several and often severe problems. Research into hearing and techniques to restore hearing is a multidisciplinary and very broad field of study. The Vibration and Acoustics Lab at Federal University of Santa Catarina, together with the Laboratory for Signal Processing and the Undergraduate Program in Speech and Hearing Sciences, started research in this area around five years ago, focussing on topics related to the development of a totally implantable cochlear implant (TICI). A TICI require some totally new approaches, especially with regard to sound pick-up, battery life and low consumption signal processing capabilities. The talk will introduce our activities regarding the development of a totally implantable sensor for sound pick-up, the analysis of the human middle ear’s dynamics, the electrical simulation of the human cochlea and the evaluation of hearing capabilities and prosthesis.
