SUMMARY:Merten: Performance of short term memory under the influence of (a)synchronous audio visual speech stimuli
DESCRIPTION:Nowadays\, more and more conversations are conducted via technical aids\, such as computers or mobile phones. In technology\, there can be connection or processing problems that lead to disturbances in playback. As a result\, audio and video signals\, for example\, are time-delayed\, which can be noticeable and disturbing. Since short-term memory is needed\, especially in speech comprehension\, to extract information from what is said\, the question is to what extent these imperceptible and noticeable time offsets have an influence on short-term memory. To answer this\, a serial recall task was designed to investigate the effect of the delays on short-term memory. In this task\, participants are presented with items that they must recall in the same order as presented. The auditory stimuliwere spoken numbers and the visual stimuli were the lip movements during pronunciation. In addition to conditions in which the auditory and visual stimuli were presented separately\, there were audiovisual conditions in which the stimuli were delayed with respect to each other by up to 400 ms. On the one hand\, no significant effect of the delays was observed in short-term memory performance. On the other hand\, it was observed that the participants performed significantly worse in the visual condition. These results suggest that the lip movements were not read well. Furthermore\, this could have caused the delays to be noticeable but not irritating due to the inaccuracy in lip reading. Nevertheless\, participants might have achieved comparable results with more effort. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 954 4073 3814\nPasswort: 450783 \n

SUMMARY:Sun: Numerical analysis of anvil vibrations during Ultrasonic Metal Welding
DESCRIPTION:Ultrasonic Metal Welding (USMW) is a widely used manufacturing technology for joining metal components in modern industry. The metal sheets which are placed above the anvil need to be bonded. The sonotrode\, which is also called the horn\, vibrates at high frequency and on the top of the metal sheets. The constant clamp force applied on the metal sheets from the horn produces friction force between two metal sheets and makes them join together. The joining strength is the most important aspect of the welding process. However\, it is impossible to directly measure the joining strength in reality. One way to estimate the joining strength is by measuring the vibrations of the horn and the anvil and using these measurement data to compute the vibrations of the welding area which can represent the joining strength during the welding process. Therefore\, the goal of this thesis is to use the simulations with COMSOL and measurements by Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) to help us learn more about the physical behavior of the anvil during the welding process. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 954 4073 3814\nPasswort: 450783
