SUMMARY:Merino-Martinez: Acoustic imaging in aeroacoustic applications
DESCRIPTION:Aircraft and wind turbine noise emissions are increasingly important issues for society due to the noise annoyance and negative health effects in local communities\, as well as for the industry due to operational limitations imposed by noise regulations. The field of aeroacoustics aims at understanding the noise generation mechanisms behind these emissions and\, ultimately\, device noise reduction strategies to mitigate them. Microphone arrays and acoustic imaging methods have become the standard approach in experimental aeroacoustic research. In a nutshell\, by using multiple synchronized microphones and analysing their respective signals and their time delays\, we can apply acoustic imaging methods to visualize sound and identify and study all the noise sources present in complex systems\, such as aircraft\, wind turbines\, drones\, etc. This talk will discuss the basics of signal processing required for understanding acoustic imaging algorithms. The main limitations of this approach\, such as limited spatial resolution or the presence of sidelobes (spurious sound sources) will be explained\, as well as advanced techniques to mitigate them.
