SUMMARY:Leon Dülberg: Investigation of Just Noticeable Differences in Psychoacoustic Parameters Using Synthetic Test Signals
DESCRIPTION:Tonality and roughness according to ECMA-418-2 (Sottek Hearing Model) are increasingly used to evaluate sounds. However\, it is not well understood how large a change in tuHMS or asper must be before it becomes audible. This thesis measures just noticeable differences (JNDs) for both parameters using synthetic test signals. Tonality was varied by adjusting the level of a sinusoid superimposed on critical-band noise at 450 Hz\, 1 kHz\, and 4 kHz. Roughness was varied via the amplitude modulation depth of critical-band and broadband noise. All stimuli were presented at 60 dB(A). Twenty-four listeners completed eight blocks of an adaptive three-alternative forced-choice (3-AFC) procedure with a 1-up/2-down staircase. For a reference of 1 tuHMS\, the median was between 0.30 and 0.42 tuHMS\, with an average JND across all blocks of about 0.39 tuHMS. However\, the roughness JNDs depended strongly on the condition\, with medians ranging from 0.04 to 0.15 asper.
