SUMMARY:Burger: Internship with Max-Planck-Institute for Brain Research
DESCRIPTION:For my internship I joined the “Social Systems and Circuits Group” which is part of the MPI for Brain Research\, located in Frankfurt am Main\, Germany. It focuses on identifying neural mechanisms for the processing and production of socially meaningful communication\, with a particular emphasis on vocal communication. The research is carried out by studying vocal communication in the naked mole-rat\, a highly vocal and highly social rodent. My task was to develop a tracking system to follow the position of the naked mole-rats in their cage system. Within this system there should also be the possibility to record the vocalisations of the naked mole-rat\, as well as to determine their hierarchy with the help of video tracking. Ultimately the development of this tracking system (including vocalisation recordings and automated hierarchy determination) was to monitor the evolution of social dynamics within colonies of naked mole-rat and analyse how vocal communication facilitates social exchanges. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 923 3748 3140\nPasswort: 042503

SUMMARY:Sani: Working with Multi Channel Audio: Setting up demos in SCaLAr
DESCRIPTION:Working with 3D audio formats\, especially Ambisonics\, is not as straight-forward as traditional channel-based formats like stereo or 5.1. This gets even more complex with irregular loudspeaker arrays like SCaLAr: it is unlike any conventional speaker configuration\, and therefore requires combinations of tools to achieve a relatively easy “drag and drop and play” situation.  I will present custom designed demos for the SCaLAr array of various sound-field based and channel-based 3D microphone recordings as well as contents encoded in 3D formats by combining Reaper and Max to have a relatively flexible setup for demo purposes. Additionally\, I investigate the usability of RAVEN and Virtual Acoustics for post-production of a VR project as well as for a 6 DoF interactive demo in the VR Lab. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 923 3748 3140\nPasswort: 042503

SUMMARY:Zhou: Short-term memory performance under varying signal-to-noise ratio
DESCRIPTION:The term irrelevant sound effect (ISE) refers to a significant reduction in the immediate serial recall of lists of presented items\, usually digits or letters\, when irrelevant auditory sound is presented together with the items to be memorized. This study aimed to investigate the impact of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and presentation modality on short-term memory performance. The listening experiment was conducted on 10 adults. The established serial-recall paradigm is used\, which allows the evaluation of short-term memory performance. Statistical analysis showed that changes in SNR within the chosen range do not have significant effect on the accuracy or reaction time of the memory tasks\, while the presence of irrelevant background noise has a greater impact on the accuracy of the auditory tasks compared to the visual tasks. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 928 7040 0223\nPasswort: 888156

SUMMARY:Hillert: Implementation and Evaluation of Models for the Simulation of Cochlear Hearing Loss
DESCRIPTION:Sensorineural hearing loss is a common problem and causes a decreasing quality of life for the people affected. For several reasons\, the realistic simulation of these impairments may be considered desirable. These include raising awareness for the problem in the general public\, extending the capabilities of hearing models used to predict psychoacoustic parameters\, and designing listening experiments in which the hearing abilities of normal hearing participants are deliberately impaired. The purpose of this thesis was gathering and evaluating existing implementations of hearing loss simulators. The code of the simulators was extended to improve performance and achieve better comparability by implementing a common set of basic features\, where necessary. These features include the possibility to input a predefined audiometric curve\, which is considered by the model during the signal processing accordingly. Real-time capability was not defined as a necessary feature\, as the context comprises listening experiments using preprocessed stimuli. The metrological analyses focused on the characteristics of filters and compressive behavior. As a first step of the perceptive evaluation\, a listening experiment with 22 participants was conducted to determine how accurately the hearing thresholds of normal hearing participants could be altered towards the hearing levels of predefined audiograms representing mild and moderate age-related hearing loss. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 974 5654 1819\nPasswort: 609459
