SUMMARY:Jain: Text Mining of Vocabulary for Architectural and Acoustic Assessment
DESCRIPTION:We often see a disconnect between how people express themselves through language and how those words are perceived or interpreted. This gap exists\, for example\, between architects who strive to meet client expectations and users of the designed spaces who express their needs and requirements. We aim to bridge this gap by investigating the vocabulary humans use to describe their perception of a designed space. To accomplish this\, we collect newspaper articles describing 11 newly constructed concert halls and extract the vocabulary (more specifically\, adjectives)\, that are used to describe the interior\, exterior\, acoustics\, and „feel“ of the concert hall. We leverage Machine Learning algorithms for data extraction\, cleaning and clustering of adjectives. For adjectives\, we extract their embeddings\, which are vectors that encode the local context in which the adjectives appear. We use Word2Vec algorithm to extract the embeddings\, and then group adjectives used in a similar context to obtain clusters that can be seen to describe visual\, and auditory perception of people. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 932 0597 4885\nPasswort: 027376

SUMMARY:Schäfer: Virtual Acoustics (VA) v2022a: General concept\, new features and use cases
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Acoustics (VA) is a powerful framework for the auralization of virtual scenes and is developed at the Institute for Hearing Technology and Acoustics. It uses physics-based models for source\, sound propagation and spatialization at the receiver and allows rendering scenes in real-time. Due to its modularity\, VA can be applied to a variety of scenarios. However\, this also is one of the main obstacles for new users when trying to get started. \nWith the new version v2022a\, some major updates within the software but also the documentation are introduced making developers’ and users’ lives easier. In this presentation\, the general concept behind VA’s audio processing is recapped before introducing the new features of v2022a. Finally\, a variety of use cases – ranging from free-field over room acoustic to aircraft flyover scenarios – are discussed. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 967 4125 4720\nPasswort: 736370

SUMMARY:Gierden: Praxissemester with AQ Solutions
DESCRIPTION:I conducted my internship at the company AQ Solutions which produces medical implants. It focuses on prostheses for revision surgery\, including standard as well as patient specific implants which are all produced using additive manufacturing. I was part of a project concerning patient specific hip prostheses. My task included the automation of two finite-element-analyses (FEA) for preclinical testing according to the two standards ISO 7206-4:2010 and ISO 7206-6:2013. They describe how to determine the endurance properties of stemmed femoral components of total hip joints under specified conditions. After having realized the automation of the FEAs using the API of Solidworks\, I tested all prostheses available in the database of AQ Solutions to identify the worst-case prostheses that still fulfill all requirements so that they can be used as references for future prostheses. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 960 9631 3011\nPasswort: 688361

SUMMARY:Schmeling: Internship with fka GmbH\, Aachen
DESCRIPTION:The internship was performed in the Human-Machine-Interaction group within the “Automated Driving” business area and deals with two main projects. The first project deals with the development of a system for objective ergonomic evaluation of HMI steering concepts using 3D-cameras (Microsoft Kinect)\, computer vision and body tracking. The main task of the second project was the hard- and software development of an Arduino-based controller for hands-on-detection in the steering wheel of a simulator car. The controller also had to communicate with the other devices in the car via LIN-bus. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 960 9631 3011\nPasswort: 688361

SUMMARY:Gómez Belmonte: Evaluation of the validity of a theoretical model in USMW
DESCRIPTION:Ultrasonic metal welding (USMW) is a technique of welding small-area materials by means of high-frequency vibration friction welding. Despite its wide use\, it is still hard to monitor the welding process\, and optimise the strengths of the welds it produces. The objective of this work is to offer a simple and automated characterization of the state of the welding process over time. This would allow quality control of all welds in an industrial process.\nFurthermore\, the analysis of the model and the available data will provide a better understanding of the physical behaviour of the weld over time.\nThis study will focus specifically on the USMW of two copper parts\, analysing different measurements made with laser Doppler vibrometers and a high-speed camera. First\, whether the motion transfer process between the horn and the anvil fulfils the properties of linearity and time invariance (LTI system)\, and can therefore be described by a transfer function\, is checked. Then\, the different phases of the welding process can be studied. After this validation and analysis\, with the data obtained from the measurements\, the validity of a mechanical model will be studied by trying to fit it to the results of the measurements.\nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 951 2703 1223\nPasswort: 927012

SUMMARY:Alvarez-Morales: Cathedral acoustics through experimental measurements and simulation techniques
DESCRIPTION:Cathedrals are significant pieces of architecture\, symbols of the European culture\, whose grandiosity is the result not only of their extraordinary visual features\, but also of their remarkable acoustic environment. \nThis talk summarises the methodology utilised to analyse and preserve the acoustics of a sample of European cathedrals\, which is based on the analysis of a set of measured and simulated room impulse responses (RIR). On-site RIR are registered to describe the current acoustic properties of each building while simulation techniques are applied to explore their acoustics through history\, which might have been altered\, for instance\, by significant architectural changes that each cathedral suffered over time. \nThe research work presented is linked to three funded projects: two Spanish national projects on the Acoustics and Virtual Reality in Spanish Cathedrals\, and the EC-funded Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship ‘Cathedral Acoustics’. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 921 4539 6977\nPasswort: 476589
