SUMMARY:Dokhanchi: Measurement of the Indoor Air Temperature Distribution using Acoustic Travel-Time TOMography (ATOM)
DESCRIPTION:To assess the thermal comfort in the indoor spaces such as office rooms generally a large number of thermal sensors is mounted in the workplaces. The main drawback of this conventional method is recording data at certain locations instead of distribution of the target parameter in the entire room including the occupant zone. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional sensors\, Acoustic travel-time TOMography (ATOM) offers an alternative based on measuring the transmission sound velocity signals. \nThis presentation reports research on development of the ATOM measuring system at the Bauhaus-University Weimar while coupling the analysis methods of tomography and room acoustics. The developed method uses high-energy early reflections in addition to the direct paths between transducers for the travel time estimation. In this way\, reflections can provide multiple sound paths that allow the room coverage to be maintained even when a few or even only one transmitter and receiver are used. The approaches have been used to develop the ATOM system include development of numerical methods and simulations and conducting experimental measurements.  The measurement results and accuracy analyses indicate that the ATOM method is very suitable for measuring the temperature distribution in rooms.

SUMMARY:Li: Geometry reduction of acoustic models
DESCRIPTION:Audio-visual experiences of modeled spaces play a key role when studying the human perception of the built environment\, and the results should give us an intuitive sense of the real situation. Acoustic models need a low number of polygons in order to be simulated efficiently. It is at the same time important to retain acoustic properties while simplification. But the reconstruction of existing architecture is usually achieved by photogrammetry\, which results in noisy and geometrically complex 3D meshes. They must be post-processed to become suitable for simulation. \nIn this thesis\, a mesh-filtering algorithm is analyzed that follows a feature-preserving approach. This is expected to be an important step before the mesh’s number of polygons can be reduced. The algorithm has been implemented in Matlab. Two models serve as test scenarios\, i.e. a photogrammetry mesh of the Eurogress hall in Aachen and a generic simple room. To evaluate the algorithm’s performance\, first\, the change of geometrical shapes is inspected by means of the number of iterations and selected filter weights. Secondly\, geometrical acoustic simulation is performed to analyze the filter’s impact on the acoustic simulation result. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail.

SUMMARY:Schmitt: The influence of realistic background noise on auditory selective attention
DESCRIPTION:Every day we are exposed to background noise with a multitude of simultaneous noises from different origin\, for example on the bus\, at work\, or at a party. Nevertheless\, we can listen to specific sounds or voices out of this mixture due to our ability of auditory selective attention\, which enables us to focus on relevant sound sources and block irrelevant background noise. \nIn order to investigate close to real-life scenarios\, this study extended a virtual reality classroom scene and an established paradigm by various realistic noise conditions in order to investigate their influence on auditory selective attention switch. The influence of the realistic conditions was analyzed and compared with the influence of artificial noise. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 954 4073 3814\nPasswort: 450783
