SUMMARY:Westphal: Untersuchung von Höranstrengung bei Kindern in realitätsnahen Hörsituationen
DESCRIPTION:Kinder sind fast täglich mit komplexen akustischen Hörsituationen konfrontiert\, wie z. B. im Kindergarten oder in der Schule. Ein aufstrebendes Forschungsgebiet beschäftigt sich mit der Frage\, wie anstrengend das Hören für Kinder in solchen Situationen ist\, und wie diese Höranstrengung am besten gemessen werden kann. In dieser Studie wurde ein Response Time Paradigma mit einer Worterkennungsaufgabe verwendet\, um die Höranstrengung bei Kindern im Alter von fünf bis sechs Jahren zu untersuchen. Hierzu wurden plausible Audiowiedergabeverfahren eingesetzt\, um realitätsnahe Hörsituationen zu schaffen. Die zu verstehenden Wörter wurden ohne Hintergrundlärm und in Multi-Talker Babble Lärm sowie in zwei unterschiedlichen akustischen Bedingungen (schalltot und mit Raumeffekten) wiedergegeben. Zusätzlich wurden vier Aufgabenschwierigkeitsstufen eingeführt. Die einfachste Aufgabe bestand in der reinen Worterkennung. Um den Schwierigkeitsgrad zu erhöhen\, wurde der Worterkennungsaufgabe eine Entscheidungsaufgabe vorangestellt. Der zeitliche Abstand zwischen dem Beginn der beiden Aufgabenreize und damit die Schwierigkeit variierten. Außerdem wurde die subjektive Wahrnehmung von Höranstrengung mit Hilfe eines Fragebogens ausgewertet. Insgesamt nahmen 25 Kinder an der Studie teil. Die Ergebnisse weisen auf eine größere Höranstrengung bei Hintergrundgeräuschen sowie mit zunehmender Aufgabenschwierigkeit hin. Dies unterstützt die Verwendung des Paradigmas für Kinder zwischen fünf und sechs Jahren. Allerdings deuten sie auch darauf hin\, dass der verwendete Fragebogen nicht geeignet war\, um die subjektiv empfundene Höranstrengung bei Kindern in dieser Altersgruppe zu messen. Daher lassen sich keine zuverlässigen Rückschlüsse über Zusammenhänge zwischen der Verhaltensmessung und der subjektiven Messung von Höranstrengung ziehen. \nEN: Investigating listening effort in children in realistic listening situations \nChildren are facing complex acoustic listening situations almost every day\, for example in kindergarten or at school. An emerging field of research deals with the question of how effortful listening is for children in such situations and how this listening effort can be measured best. In this study\, a response time paradigm with a word recognition task was used to investigate listening effort in children aged five to six years. For this purpose\, plausible sound reproduction techniques were used to create realistic listening situations. The words to be understood were played back without background noise and in multi-talker babble noise as well as in two different acoustic conditions (anechoic and with room effects). In addition\, four levels of task difficulty were introduced. The easiest task consisted of pure word recognition. To increase the level of difficulty\, the word recognition task was preceded by a decision task. The time interval between the start of the two task stimuli and thus the difficulty varied. Moreover\, the subjective perception of listening effort was analysed using a questionnaire. A total of 25 children participated in the study. The results indicate a higher listening effort in the presence of background noise and with increasing task difficulty. This supports the use of the paradigm for children between the ages of five and six. However\, they also reveal that the applied questionnaire was not suitable for measuring the subjectively perceived listening effort in children of this age group. Therefore\, no reliable conclusions can be drawn about correlations between the behavioural measurement and the subjective measurement of listening effort. SUMMARY:Yuan: Plausible Road Traffic Auralization
DESCRIPTION:This research focuses on simulating road traffic soundscapes using auralization techniques. A structured workflow for urban traffic auralization is developed by integrating SUMO traffic flow data with acoustic simulation tools such as RAVEN and Pigeon. To generate plausible traffic simulations\, a custom script is implemented to produce representative vehicle trajectories. Additionally\, parameters such as crossfading and update rates are optimized to ensure smooth and plausible audio transitions in auralization.\nPlausibility is assessed through experiments conducted in free-field conditions\, focusing on the effects of sound smoothness and varying traffic scenarios. A series of analyses between measured and simulated vehicle trajectory data in auralization indicates that while some aspects of the simulation perform reasonably well\, significant differences are observed in overall loudness and timing. SUMMARY:Doma: Numerical and Perceptual Evaluation of HRTF Accuracy
DESCRIPTION:Head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) describe the interaction between the listener’s body and incident sound waves\, as they travel from an arbitrary source position to the left and right ear canal entrances. By reproducing spatial cue information for various directions\, a multi-dimensional HRTF data set allows for synthesizing virtual sound sources\, i.e.\, artificially creating the impression of a source positioned in space. The use of individually tailored HRTFs – with listener-specific cues acquired\, e.g.\, through direct measurement\, simulation\, or various approximation approaches – has been shown to provide an improved virtual audio experience compared to the use of generic (non-individual) data. To validate new and further improve existing HRTF acquisition methods\, a meaningful representation of spectral deviations between the data sets is required. This representation should be multi-dimensional to allow for various types of possible distortions to be captured. It is furthermore sought to identify the needed level of spectral accuracy by establishing a relationship between the numerical representation and the perceptibility of the error\, as\, below this just noticeable difference (JND) threshold\, it would be neither necessary nor beneficial to further optimize the different approaches for HRTF acquisition. \nThe present work focuses on differences in magnitude spectra and the ensuing disparities in monaural cue information. The goal is the step-wise derivation of a parametric model that can predict the likelihood of discriminating between two arbitrary HRTF pairs upon use in binaural synthesis under free-field conditions. To this end\, a listening test paradigm is developed for examining the detectability of uni-lateral HRTF differences. Based on the acquired perceptual data\, a monaural JND model is derived\, building on the common variance of a set of three numerical error metrics. In turn\, this model serves as a basis for a subsequent bi-lateral variation experiment. A binaural JND model is thereupon deduced\, which is applicable to simultaneous changes in HRTF spectra within both ear signals. Finally\, the derived monaural and binaural models are applied in various HRTF comparisons involving different acquisition methods\, in order to assess the audibility of commonly present distortions. In many cases\, the results highlight a direction-dependent perceptibility of the distortions\, which is related to the spectro-spatial properties inherent to the HRTF sets. SUMMARY:Berzborn: Measurement and Quantification of Directional Sound Field Decay
DESCRIPTION:The random-incidence absorption coefficient is measured in a reverberation room as per ISO354:2003 (2003)\, assuming a diffuse and isotropic sound field. However\, reproducibility issues across different laboratories suggest that the assumption of isotropy does not hold in practice. \nThis dissertation presents a novel experimental method for capturing and analyzing the directional characteristics of energy decay in reverberation rooms. The method involves decomposing the sound field into plane waves using microphone arrays. Using Schroeder integration\, the newly introduced directional energy decay curve (DEDC) is calculated on the time dependent angular plane waves density function. The DEDC is decomposed into spherical harmonics\, which are used to formulate time-dependent estimators for isotropy and axial symmetry. The estimators are formulated by leverage the symmetry relationships of spherical harmonics and offer high temporal and angular resolution. The DEDC framework further enables the analysis of directionally non-uniform damping of the sound field. An inverse problem is formulated using the DEDC framework and a stochastic model for directionally dependent energy decay. Variational inference is utilized to identify the model parameters and provide uncertainty measures. Experimental results obtained in a reverberation room in four configurations are presented. These configurations include the room with and without a highly absorptive glass wool specimen\, and both configurations additionally with and without panel diffusers. The findings reveal non-isotropic sound fields\, particularly in the presence of the absorbing specimen. It is shown that sound field isotropy varies over time\, decreasing in configurations for which non-uniform distributions of damping are identified. \nFinally\, the relationship between the symmetry quantification results and the errors in the random-incidence absorption coefficient is explored using a statistic model. A combined factor analysis and linear regression model reveals a statistically significant relationship between the estimators and the absorption coefficient error. SUMMARY:Loh: Noise Exposure in Pre- and Primary Schools - Exploring Noise Effects on Young Children
DESCRIPTION:As the awareness of health effects caused by noise has grown in recent years\, so has the importance of studying noise in educational buildings. This dissertation focuses specifically on the impact of noise on young children in educational buildings from a children’s perspective\, a topic that has not been extensively explored. Previous research indicated that noise can significantly impact children’s performance and cognition\, making this a crucial area of study. However\, noise in educational buildings is complex\, involving internal background noise\, individual distracting sound incidences\, external sources\, and noise generated by children during activities. Communication in such environments resembles the cocktail-party effect. Focusing on children’s perspective in these complex acoustic environments\, there is limited research on the perceptual and cognitive differences between children and adults regarding noise\, and whether adult-based insights apply to children remains uncertain. \nThe dissertation has two primary aims: 1.) addressing the complexity of noise in educational buildings\, and 2.) examining noise effects on young children in controlled listening experiments. For the first aim\, children’s perspectives are integrated by assessing noise scenes through room acoustics and in-situ measurements using head and torso simulators of different anthropometric sizes. Frequency-dependent measures (e.g.\, psychoacoustic parameters) and their relation to subjective noise ratings by children and adults are explored. Furthermore\, the impact of different activities on noise levels is investigated. For the second aim\, a child-appropriate listening experiment framework is developed to study young children’s cognitive performance\, focusing on auditory selective attention in realistic noisy environments.
