SUMMARY:Frederike Rust: Sensory Inattention During Cognitive Load: A VR Study of Visual\, Auditory\, and Audiovisual Factors
DESCRIPTION:Humans often miss otherwise obvious unexpected events when they are focused on a demanding task. This can occur in the auditory as well as visual domain – inattentional deafness and blindness\, respectively. These phenomena can pose a danger in everyday life\, such as not noticing a child crossing the street while focusing on other aspects of driving\, or missing an alarm. Additionally\, the phenomena could have an impact on research\, as some manipulations like room acoustics or speaker position did not influence listening effort and memory performance. This thesis tested the hypothesis that the lack of effects could be due to inattentional insensitivity\, meaning that participants were so focused on the task that they did not perceive anything else.\nA new multimodal paradigm was designed to test inattentional insensitivity in the visual\, auditory and audiovisual domain\, as well as performance differences between sensory modalities in the task at hand. In a virtual environment\, participants performed the paced serial addition test. One third of participants performed the test in the visual domain (PVSAT)\, one third in the auditory domain (PASAT) and the last third in the audiovisual domain. At some point during the experiment\, a wolf or voice\, respectively\, walked across the VR scene. Participants were questioned about their awareness of the unexpected stimulus afterwards.\nTask performance differed significantly between conditions. Participants performed significantly worse in the auditory modality compared to the visual and audiovisual condition. No significant difference was observed between the visual and audiovisual condition. Regarding inattentional insensitivity\, 89% of participants did not notice the unexpected stimulus in the visual modality compared to 24% in the auditory modality. In the audiovisual condition\, 45% missed the unexpected visual stimulus and 28% missed the unexpected auditory stimulus. Thus\, it was validated that the new paradigm can induce inattentional blindness and deafness in all three presentation modalities. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 954 4073 3814\nPasswort: 450783

SUMMARY:Mochammad Setyokusumo: Angular Resolution of Acoustic Reflections in Sound Propagation Modeling
DESCRIPTION:Geometrical acoustics has been widely used to simulate sound propagation in various environments because it has a lower computational cost than wave-based numerical simulations. An acoustic radiosity model (Sparrowpy) with a tabulated BRDF extension\, which discretises reflections into finite cones based on random incidence or bidirectional scattering coefficients\, is compared to an alternative ARE-based implementation with a continuous BRDF. For this\, the Phong BRDF\, a simplified form of the Lafortune BRDF\, is adopted to describe specular reflections in acoustics. Reflected sound propagation via a square surface from a point source to a point receiver is simulated while varying angular resolution and patch size (for Sparrowpy) and the number of sampling points and Phong exponent n (for ARE)\, assuming the surface is either a perfectly specular or diffuse reflector. The simulation results are compared to analytical solutions as the ground truth. Whilst a clear threshold for accurate modelling of specular reflection using tabulated BRDF could not be identified\, a threshold for both specular and diffuse reflection modelling was successfully established for the acoustic Phong BRDF via ARE implementation. The presentation will be given in English. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 954 4073 3814\nPasswort: 450783

SUMMARY:Xiao Lou: Impact of Diffraction Orders in Dynamic Urban Acoustic Simulations
DESCRIPTION:In urban acoustic environments\, sound propagation is heavily influenced by obstacles that block the direct line-of-sight\, making diffraction a crucial mechanism for plausible acoustic simulations. While the Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD) resolves the unnatural discontinuities present in standard Geometric Acoustics (GA)\, the computational cost increases exponentially with each additional diffraction order. This thesis investigates the perceptual relevance of diffraction and reflection orders to determine an optimal threshold that can improve computational efficiency without compromising perceptual realism. \nUsing the Pynamic framework and the MOSQITO sound quality library\, a workflow was developed to generate time-dependent psychoacoustic metrics\, specifically loudness and sharpness\, integrated with Just Noticeable Difference (JND) thresholds. The study analyzed various geometric scenarios\, from simple 2D convex and concave edges to 3D building corners and complex urban intersections. \nThe results demonstrate that the optimal simulation order is highly geometry-dependent. For models with purely convex edges\, a simulation of third-order diffraction is required to smooth out discontinuities at shadow boundaries. However\, in scenarios with concave edges or in complex urban environments with ground reflections\, the masking effect caused by strong reflected energy often renders higher-order diffractions inaudible\, allowing for reduced simulation orders. Furthermore\, for an urban canyon model characterized by infinite parallel reflections\, it is recommended to neglect reflections beyond the third order. Finally\, the analysis reveals that stochastic signals with increased low-frequency energy\, such as pink noise\, and motion trajectories extending deep into acoustic shadow zones represent the stricter conditions for defining perceptual thresholds. These findings provide a set of quantitative guidelines for optimizing dynamic urban acoustic simulations. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 954 4073 3814\nPasswort: 450783

SUMMARY:Mochammad Setyokusumo: Industrial Internship at HEAD acoustics GmbH in the Engineering Service Department
DESCRIPTION:Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Talk-Through (TT) modes are common features in modern headsets. ANC typically provides enough attenuation that background noise becomes difficult to characterise. In this internship\, several warning signals\, such as passing cars and shouted speech\, were recorded and used as background noise\, and multiple headsets with ANC and TT were evaluated using these signals to determine whether recent headsets completely distort the signals or leave enough of a recognisable “footprint” for the user to identify them. \nMelden Sie sich hier an um Einladungen zu den Kolloquium-Vorträgen per E-Mail zu erhalten.\nRegister here to receive the invitations to colloquium talks via e-mail. \nZoom-Meeting-ID: 954 4073 3814\nPasswort: 450783
