SUMMARY:Frederike Rust: Breathing Rate Detection Using High-Pressure Sensors in Compressed-Air Breathing Apparatus
DESCRIPTION:Firefighting is physically highly demanding\, possibly inducing severe health risks. Hence\, monitoring vital parameters of firefighters at the scene is desirable. In this internship at Dräger it was assessed how accurately the breathing rate can be estimated using the pressure sensor of a compressed-air breathing apparatus. \nDifferent algorithms for estimating the breathing rate were developed and improved. The quality of the estimation using these algorithms was first evaluated in simulations. Afterwards\, breathing signals were measured with a compressed-air breathing apparatus and an active servo lung. Even though our hearing ability has a profound impact on communication\, mental health\, and quality of life\, many people delay or avoid using well established hearing aids due to cost\, accessibility\, and social barriers. \nApple is expanding into the health space following the goal of democratizing health and giving users a better overall understanding of their own well-being. Hearing Health is part of this broader vision\, where Apple is taking a different approach compared to traditional\, well-established hearing solutions. \nThe presentation will share insights from an internship in Apple’s Acoustics Hearing Health Team in Cupertino\, California. SUMMARY:Melchior Käppel: Multimodal Investigations of Listening Effort in Children Across Speech Intelligibility Levels
DESCRIPTION:Listening under challenging conditions can be effortful and requires considerable cognitive resources. This is particularly relevant for children\, for whom speech understanding is integral for learning and development. The Framework for Understanding Effortful Listening (FUEL) suggests that invested listening effort does not increase indefinitely with task demands\, as motivation is an important factor in determining further effort investment. This implies a non-linear relationship between task demands and invested listening effort\, with the highest effort at intermediate demands. \nHowever\, previous studies in children have mainly considered selected acoustic conditions and therefore do not allow listening effort to be systematically characterized across the full range of speech intelligibility. This study investigated whether the assumption of a non-linear effort investment also applies to children and is reflected in behavioral\, subjective\, and neurophysiological measures. \n29 normal-hearing children aged 10 to 12 years completed a word-to-picture matching task at five individually adjusted speech intelligibility levels ranging from 5% to 95% while response times\, subjective listening effort\, and electroencephalography (EEG) were recorded. Results showed considerable differences between children and measures. Behavioral response times were predominantly monotonic\, although a smaller group showed the expected inverted-U-shaped pattern\, whereas subjective listening effort consistently increased with decreasing intelligibility. Neurophysiological responses were mainly non-linear and differed between children. However\, overall they indicated the strongest effort-related processing at intermediate task demands. The findings therefore partly support a non-linear view of effort investment\, while showing that listening effort cannot be characterized by one universal response pattern across measures or individuals. \nDE: Multimodale Untersuchungen zur Höranstrengung bei Kindern in Abhängigkeit der Sprachverständlichkeit \nSprachverstehen ist eine zentrale Voraussetzung für Kommunikation\, Lernen und die kognitive Entwicklung von Kindern. Unter ungünstigen akustischen Bedingungen ist es jedoch häufig mit erhöhter Höranstrengung verbunden. Theoretische Modelle wie das Framework for Understanding Effortful Listening (FUEL) gehen davon aus\, dass die investierte Höranstrengung nicht unbegrenzt mit der Aufgabenschwierigkeit zunimmt. Vielmehr hängt die weitere Anstrengungsinvestition unter anderem von der Motivation ab\, sodass bei mittleren Anforderungen die höchste Höranstrengung zu erwarten ist. \nBisherige Untersuchungen bei Kindern betrachteten jedoch hauptsächlich ausgewählte realistische Hörsituationen und erlauben daher keine systematische Charakterisierung der Höranstrengung über den gesamten Bereich der Sprachverständlichkeit. In dieser Arbeit wurde deshalb untersucht\, ob der durch FUEL beschriebene nichtlineare Zusammenhang auch bei Kindern auftritt und sich in verhaltensbezogenen\, subjektiven und neurophysiologischen Reaktionen zeigt. \nIn einem kindgerechten Hörversuch wurden bei fünf verschiedenen Sprachverständlichkeitsstufen zwischen 5% und 95% Antwortzeiten\, subjektive Höranstrengung und EEG bei 29 normalhörenden Kindern im Alter von 10 bis 12 Jahren erfasst. Die Ergebnisse zeigten unterschiedliche Verläufe zwischen Kindern und Messverfahren. Während Antwortzeiten mehrheitlich mit steigender Sprachverständlichkeit monoton abnahmen und nur eine kleinere Gruppe den erwarteten umgekehrt U-förmigen Verlauf zeigte\, stieg die subjektive Höranstrengung mit abnehmender Sprachverständlichkeit einheitlich an. Die neurophysiologischen Messungen zeigten dagegen überwiegend nichtlineare Verläufe und deuteten insgesamt auf die höchste Anstrengungsinvestition bei mittleren Anforderungen hin.
