DESCRIPTION:Probing Ultrafast Spin Transport with Terahertz Electromagnetic Pulses\nTo take advantage of the electron spin in future electronics\, spin angular momentum needs to be transported and detected. Electric fields and temperature gradients have been shown to efficiently drive spin transport at megahertz and gigahertz frequencies. \nHowever\, to probe the initial elementary steps that lead to the formation of spin currents\, we need to launch and measure transport on much faster\, that is\, on femtosecond time scales. This goal is achieved by employing both ultrashort optical and terahertz electromagnetic pulses. \nWe show that this experimental strategy provides new insights into important spintronic phenomena such as the spin Seebeck effect\, spin-to-charge-current conversion and anisotropic magnetoresistance. Interesting photonic applications such as the efficient generation of ultrashort terahertz electromagnetic pulses will also be addressed. \nFor further information visit the event website.

DESCRIPTION:Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) and RWTH Aachen University (RWTH Aachen) have been holding joint workshops annually since 2019. Going forward\, we will separately be holding two- to three-hour mini-workshops on themes of interest to our two universities. In the first mini-workshop\, six speakers will present research under the theme Smart Wearables. \nAs travel between Germany and Japan continues to be restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the mini-workshops will be held online. DESCRIPTION:October 05-06\, 2021 in Aachen/Germany\, online participation possible\n \nLithium ion battery storage as stationary energy storage is the focus of the seminar. The topics of economy\, technology and safety are discussed in detail. \nContent \nThe costs for battery storage systems have been falling rapidly for years – this opens up numerous opportunities for new market segments. The seminar illustrates the current market opportunities for stationary storage systems (storage) and provides comprehensive background knowledge on current technical developments. \nLithium-ion batteries (accumulators) with their performance and safety characteristics\, development potentials and system-related requirements will be discussed in detail. In addition\, both classic storage technologies such as lead-acid batteries or pumped storage power plants as well as innovative developments such as redox flow and high-temperature batteries are considered for comparison. \nThe seminar covers the entire value chain of storage systems ‘from the cell to the application’: \nThere will be practice-relevant discussions on battery management systems\, pack design and thermal management as well as optimal storage dimensioning and economic efficiency according to the EEG amendment. Storage systems are an important building block for the energy turnaround. Without energy storage (electricity storage) the so-called dark lull cannot be overcome. Photovoltaic systems in combination with electricity storage systems (accumulators) are playing an increasingly important role in the private sector. \nAbout the topic \nStorage systems will play a key role in future power grids. Falling battery storage prices will ensure in just a few years that a local supply of photovoltaic systems and home storage in Germany will be cheaper than purchasing grid electricity. Already today\, battery storage systems are taking over more and more parts of the classic system services\, especially the primary control power. After all\, the increasing share of electric vehicles in Germany will soon make enormous storage capacities available in traction batteries that can be used for innovative business areas. \nIn all cases\, affected companies must take early action to be able to use this change to their advantage. \nFurther information: www.hdt.de
