Up to 180 million euros from the \u201cNorth Rhine-Westphalia Plan for Good Infrastructure\u201d will be invested in a new building featuring an integrated \u201cAI Center.\u201d This will create new spatial and structural conditions for research and teaching in the field of artificial intelligence and related disciplines.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new building on Ahornstra\u00dfe is expected to accommodate approximately 400 academic, technical, and administrative staff members, as well as nearly 5,000 students. In addition to traditional workspaces, the plan includes real-world laboratories and co-working spaces designed to facilitate new forms of collaboration. The goal is to expand the existing structures of computer science while simultaneously creating modern working conditions that meet the demands of current research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcellent research and teaching require excellent infrastructure,\u201d emphasized Science Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.land.nrw\/landeskabinett\/ina-brandes\">Ina Brandes<\/a> during the presentation of the funding commitment. The new \u201cAI Center\u201d is intended to further enhance the appeal of North Rhine-Westphalia as a location and create an environment that is internationally competitive. The investment is part of a strategic focus on future-oriented topics, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Within RWTH as well, the new building is viewed as an important step forward. \u201cThe AI Center is coming home,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwth-aachen.de\/go\/id\/bdfr\/gguid\/PER-N2KWNXP\">Professor Leif Kobbelt<\/a>, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, referring to the planned relocation of the center\u2014currently located on Theaterstra\u00dfe\u2014to Ahornstra\u00dfe. Professor Ulrich R\u00fcdiger emphasized that modern infrastructure is a key prerequisite for transferring research results to society and further expanding RWTH\u2019s role as a high-performing research hub.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cAI Center\u201d is led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.informatik.rwth-aachen.de\/cms\/informatik\/forschung\/forschungsbereiche\/professuren-und-dozierende\/~srqyi\/univ-prof-dr-rer-nat-holger-hoos\/?allou=1\">Professor Holger Hoos<\/a> together with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsme.rwth-aachen.de\/cms\/dsme\/das-institut\/team\/~jlolt\/prof-sebastian-trimpe\/?allou=1\">Professor Sebastian Trimpe<\/a>. \u201cThe new building for the RWTH Aachen AI Center is another essential step on the path from coal to AI,\u201d explained Hoos. The focus is on developing secure, reliable, and sustainable AI systems.<\/p>\n<p>The new buildings are also intended to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration. RWTH Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwth-aachen.de\/cms\/root\/wir\/aktuell\/pressemitteilungen\/juni-2025\/~bnndxa\/der-neue-rwth-kanzler-teamplayer-und-se\/\">Thomas Tr\u00e4nnapp<\/a> noted that computer science involves a high degree of interdisciplinary networking and that the planned structures meet this need.
