At the beginning of March 2023, the funding of the consortia from the third round of calls for proposals<\/a> has started. But Base4NFDI<\/a>‘s work is already in full swing. The initiative supports and develops services that cannot be delivered NFD<\/a>I-wide by individual consortia, but are needed by many. Applications for Base4NFDI funding – to initialize services, integrate services, and begin operations – will be available at least three times per year during the initial phase. The first round in 2023 is already in full swing.<\/p>\n

Current status and schedule for 2023<\/span><\/h3>\n

The first group of proposals could be submitted by February 15, 2023. In March, these will now be discussed and evaluated by the Technical Expert Committee (TEC) and appropriate recommendations made. Based on these, the consortium meeting will decide on funding on March 31, 2023.<\/p>\n

The second round applications can be submitted until May 15, 2023. Evaluation by the TEC is scheduled for June 2023. The final decision by the consortium assembly will be made on July 7, 2023.<\/p>\n

The third round is also not long in coming. August 15, 2023 is the deadline for submission of applications for this round. In September, these will be evaluated by the TEC and the consortium assembly will decide on funding on October 6 (subject to change).<\/p>\n

Funding is expected to begin shortly after the respective decisions.<\/p>\n

The background – How is funding decided?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Each proposal is evaluated against a set of criteria<\/a> previously defined by Base4NFDI in three different phases (initialization; integration; start-up phase):<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. a section<\/a> discusses the proposals during section meetings. Proposals can be commented on and, if appropriate, integrated with proposals from other interested Sections. In addition, Sections are encouraged to optimize their proposals against the criteria prior to submission.<\/li>\n
  2. After submission of the proposals via the sections to Base4NFDI, they are sent to the supporting consortia, of which at least 25% (in the first phase) must again give their approval.<\/li>\n
  3. the technical expert committee is responsible for evaluating the proposals for basic services in terms of technical quality, interoperability with existing solutions, suitability of the proposed partner organizations and financial calculations.<\/li>\n
  4. the consortium assembly decides on the financing of the service. The consortium assembly vote reflects the level of support and commitment to a base service candidate among the consortia.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Who can apply and how?<\/span><\/h3>\n

    A proposal must be submitted by a lead institution and other participating institutions, all of which must be members of a DFG-funded NFDI consortium<\/a>. These institutions are part of different working groups of the sections that write the proposals. A template<\/a> for the proposals is available for download. Then, the proposal must be approved by the appropriate section. This means that a section can submit multiple proposals to Base4NFDI.<\/p>\n
