On April 24, 2025, the RDM Network Meeting took place in a new format. On this day, the RDM community at RWTH Aachen University gathered online for a Topic Special on \u201cAI Support in Research.\u201d The two experts Lena Nietzschmann from the RWTH Aachen University Library and Soo-Yon Kim from the Chair of Computer Science 5 (Information Systems & Databases) gave exciting presentations on the latest developments in literature research and data annotation in scientific research.<\/p>\n

RDM Network Meeting: A New Look for New Perspectives<\/span><\/h3>\n

As already announced in our last follow-up report on the RDM network meeting<\/a> in March, this was merged with the monthly Data Steward Jour Fixe. In future, the RDM network meetings will always take place on the fourth Thursday of each month. The April meeting also took place in a new setting with a fresh look. Participants were offered an exciting \u201cTopic Special<\/strong>\u201d on the focus topic of \u201cAI support in research.\u201d<\/p>\n

AI-Supported Scientific Writing: Focus on Literature Research<\/span><\/h3>\n

Lena Nietzschmann began her presentation with a general introduction to the use of AI tools in scientific writing, focusing on literature research. She presented examples of various tools such as ChatGPT and RWTHgpt, which are based on large language models (LLM), and explained techniques for identifying and analyzing relevant publications.<\/p>\n

Participants gained valuable insights into the potential of AI for increasing efficiency in the research process, as well as important information about the limitations of AI support. For example, it was advised not to use chatbots such as ChatGPT for literature research. Instead, other AI tools, known as \u201cfinders\u201d and \u201cconnectors,\u201d were recommended.<\/p>\n

Ontology-Based Annotation of Research Data Using LLMs<\/span><\/h3>\n

Soo-Yon Kim then presented the preliminary results of a master’s thesis. A tool was developed that enables concepts from ontologies to be added semi-automatically to research data and visualized as knowledge graphs. The presentation gave attendees an interesting insight into innovative approaches to annotating research data using large language models (LLMs).<\/p>\n

The RDM network meeting provided an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences in the field of digital research and demonstrated how modern technologies can help optimize the scientific work process.<\/p>\n

We would like to thank the speakers and participants for their commitment and look forward to the first in-person event of the year, our \u201cPractice Special\u201d at the RWTH University Library. The Practice Special is aimed exclusively at data stewards and active members of the RDM network and focuses on current RDM tasks and networking among participants.<\/p>\n
