Prof. Martin J. Gander – Time Parallel Time Integration

Abstract:

I will present an introduction to the emerging research area of time parallel time integration, more recently also referred to as PinT (Parallel in Time) methods. The lecture will be structured into five
parts:

1) Introduction: brief introduction to ODEs and time dependent PDEs

2) Multiple Shooting Type Methods: idea of Nievergelt from 1964, multiple shooting in time and the parareal algorithm.

3) Domain Decomposition and Waveform Relaxation: method of successive approximation, waveform relaxation based on domain decomposition.

4) Time Multigrid Methods: parabolic multigrid, time multigrid and space-time multigrid.

5) Direct Space-Time Parallel Solvers: parallel predictor corrector methods, boundary value methods, time parallel time stepping, cyclic reduction, Laplace transforms, diagonalization, RIDC and ParaExp.
