Dr. Marc S. Boxberg – A Geophysicist’s Perspective on the Modeling of Mechanical Waves

Graduate School AICES, RWTH Aachen University

The overall task of geophysics is to investigate the Earth with various physical methods. Quite a few methods make use of wave phenomena. Examples are ground penetrating radar that uses electromagnetic waves and seismic surveys that use mechanical waves. From the recorded signals, the onsets, amplitudes and waveforms can be used to infer material properties and the structure of the investigated body. Depending on the method and type of waves, this includes various scales from the pores of rocks (micro scale) up to the whole earth (global scale).

The modelling of wave propagation becomes more and more important in geophysics since it helps to improve existing methods and new methods are developed based on accurate numerical modelling. An example for a relatively new method is full waveform inversion, where the special distribution of the wave speed is inferred from the whole signal. In addition, the increase of the available computational power allows to model more complex problems like the propagation of waves in porous media where the interaction of the pore content like water or oil influence the behavior of the waves.

Different numerical methods from finite differences to the spectral element have been proposed for the forward modelling.

This talk highlights the community code NEXD, that uses the nodal discontinuous Galerkin method for the space discretization in combination with a Runge-Kutta time stepping scheme to simulate the propagation of mechanical waves. In addition, some insight into the modelling of mechanical waves shall be given by examples from seismology and ultrasound measurements.
