SUMMARY:[:en]NHR4CES - Numerical Methods for Combustion[:]
DESCRIPTION:Name: Numerical Methods for Combustion \nDate: April 10\, 2026 \nFormat: online \nMore information & registration \n\n  \nDescription\nShort abstract:\nIn the face of climate change and its undeniable threats to humanity\, the urgency for transitioning to CO2-free or carbon-neutral energy systems is paramount. While the future of energy conversion will be largely dominated by renewable sources\, such as wind and solar power\, combustion technologies will continue to play a crucial role in meeting the world’s growing energy demands\, especially in the near term. The expected rise in alternative fuels—such as biofuels\, e-fuels\, and green hydrogen—demands a deeper understanding of combustion processes to ensure cleaner\, safer\, and more efficient energy generation. Accurately simulating combustion\, however\, is a formidable challenge due to its inherently multi-physics nature\, involving complex interactions between turbulence\, chemistry\, and multi-species flows. \nThis workshop will focus on advanced numerical methods for modeling and simulating combustion phenomena in high-performance computing environments. Participants will gain insights into cutting-edge techniques and numerical methods\, covering topics such as combustion closure modeling\, load-balancing techniques\, soot formation\, and more. The workshop aims to gather different research groups\, providing a venue to exchange new ideas\, discuss challenges\, and expose this new research field to a broader community. \nFurther information: This training is given twice a year\, presenting our latest research\, to provide sufficient and up-to-date insights regarding the combustion modeling to the audience. \nInformation about SDL Energy Conversion

SUMMARY:PPCES 2026
DESCRIPTION:in cooperation with \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nParallel Programming in Computational Engineering and Science (PPCES)\nMarch 16th – 20th\, 2026\n \n\nThis one week event will continue the tradition of previous annual week-long events that take place in Aachen every spring since 2001. We will cover the basics of parallel programming using OpenMP and MPI in Fortran and C/C++ and a first step towards performance tuning. Furthermore\, we will embrace current topics in machine & deep learning. Hands-on exercises for each topic will be included. \nThe contents of the courses are generally applicable but will be specialized towards the compute cluster CLAIX which is the current system installed at RWTH’s IT Center. It might be helpful to read through the information which is provided during the HPC introduction on February 9th-10th 2025. \nTopics\nOpenMP is a widely used approach for programming shared memory architectures\, supported by most compilers nowadays. We will cover the basics of the programming paradigm as well as some advanced topics such as programming NUMA machines. The compute nodes of the RWTH HPC Cluster (aka CLAIX) contain an increasing number of cores and thus we consider shared memory programming a vital alternative for applications that cannot be easily parallelized with MPI. \nThe Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the de-facto standard for programming large HPC systems. We will introduce the basic concepts and give an overview of some advanced features. \nMachine & Deep Learning: We provide a fundamental introduction into machine and deep learning approaches as well as data processing techniques that support dataset preparation or model selection for training and inference. It covers the basic concepts for supervised and unsupervised learning such as classification\, regression\, and clustering to get a feeling which technique is appropriate for a particular problem. Additionally\, we conduct several hands-on exercises with common frameworks such as scikit-learn and PyTorch on our recent HPC Cluster CLAIX. In these exercises\, we demonstrate how to define models\, construct dataset and training pipelines or utilize monitoring and visualization of the training results\, e.g.\, with Tensorboard. For the deep learning exercises\, we start by training on a single GPU first. If that is not enough\, we also show how to scale up distributed training onto multiple compute nodes or GPUs. \nOrganization\n\nThere is no seminar fee.\nPresentations will be given in English. Slides will be available during or after the event.\nThis is an in-person event and will be held on the RWTH IT Center premises (see below).\nYou can/must register per day.\nFor more details on the target audience\, prerequistes and gained skills\, see the “Skills” sections below (per topic).\n\nGuest Speakers\nWe are happy to announce our guest speakers: Ruud van der Pas (OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB)) and Bernd Dammann (Technical University of Denmark (DTU)). \nAgenda\nAgenda is subject to slight changes. \nDay 1 + 2: OpenMP\n\n\n\nMonday\, March 16\nDay 1: OpenMP Part I\n\n\n\n09:00 – 09:10\nWelcome & Organization\nChristian Terboven (RWTH)\n\n\n09:10 – 10:10\nIntroduction into Parallel Computing\nRuud van der Pas (OpenMP ARB)\n\n\n10:10 – 10:40\nCoffee Break\n\n\n10:40 – 12:10\nOpenMP Basics – Part 1 \n\nOverview\nParallel Region\nWorksharing\nScoping\n\n\nChristian Terboven (RWTH)\n\n\n12:10 – 13:30\nLunch Break (on your own)\n\n\n13:30 – 14:30\nOpenMP Basics – Part 2 \n\nCompilers + Exercises\n\n\nChristian Terboven (RWTH)\n\n\n14:30 – 15:30\nOpenMP Basics – Part 3 (incl. SUMMARY:[:en]NHR4CES - Machine Learning in Combustion[:]
DESCRIPTION:Name: Machine Learning in Combustion \nDate: March 6\, 2026 \nFormat: online \nMore information & registeration \n  \n\n  \nDescription\n\n\nShort abstract:\nBig data and Machine Learning (ML) are driving comprehensive economic and social transformations and are rapidly becoming a core technology for scientific computing\, with numerous opportunities to advance different research areas\, such as combustion modeling. The combination of combustion applications with ML has already been applied to several Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) configurations. It is a promising research direction with the potential to enable the advancement of so far unsolved problems\, thanks to the ability of deep models to learn hierarchically with little to no need for prior knowledge. However\, this approach presents a paradigm shift to change the focus of CFD from time-consuming feature detection to in-depth examinations of relevant features\, enabling deeper insight into the physics involved in complex natural processes. \nThis training is designed to provide a basic background on machine learning applications\, highlighting some of the areas of the highest potential impact. Emerging ML areas that are promising for combustion modeling\, such as reduced-order modeling advancements\, versatile neural network architecture developments\, as well as some potential limitations\, will be discussed. The workshop aims to gather different research groups\, providing a venue to exchange new ideas\, discuss challenges\, and expose this new research field to a broader community. \nInformation about SDL Energy Conversion

SUMMARY:[:en]Introduction to High-Performance Computing 2026[:]
DESCRIPTION:This introduction provides hands-on information about working with high performance computing (HPC) at the RWTH Aachen University’s IT Center for users of the CLAIX-2023 HPC system. It is the basis for the follow-up event PPCES 2026. It focus on CLAIX-2023\, the cluster that has been installed end of 2023 at the RWTH Aachen University’s IT Center. \nThe workshop will follow the HPC Carpentry curriculum for “Introduction to High-Performance Computing” while providing specific information for the CLAIX-2023 system. It is designed for prospect users of the HPC systems installed at RWTH Aachen University. Contrary to prior years\, the workshop focuses on hands-on experiences on CLAIX-2023 to deepen the knowledge transfer on working with HPC systems in research. \nThe first part (half-day) provides an hands-on introduction to working with the UNIX shell. It follows the Software Carpentry lesson on “The Unix Shell”. No prior knowledge is required to attend. \nThe second part (two half-days) builds on the knowledge on working with the UNIX shell and focuses on working with HPC systems\, such as CLAIX-2023. It follows the HPC Carpentry lesson “Introduction to HPC”. This part of the workshop is also targeted at prospect users of our HPC systems and will provide first experiences on how to use the software and resource management system on CLAIX-2023. It will enable participants to select preinstalled software on the cluster and write basic scripts to execute it on the HPC system. You will particularly learn about the most important details on using CLAIX-2023. Those who use to run their computing applications on local machines will learn how to run those applications on the RWTH Compute Cluster provided the necessary software licenses are in place. \nThe third part (half-day) will provide an introduction to the JupyterHub Service at RWTH Aachen University as an alternative method to using HPC resources at RWTH Aachen University and will conclude with an overview and introduction on how to apply for computing time at RWTH Aachen University. \nGenerally\, this event forms the foundation needed to take part in our more in-depth event PPCES and to help take decisions on which part of PPCES might be interesting for you. \nPrerequisites\n\nBring a laptop with working Shell environment (Linux\, MacOS\, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL))\nPlease provision your CLAIX-2023 account prior to the workshop following the RegApp documentation in the ITC Help Center.\n\nAll presentations will be given in English. \nCooperation Partners\n \nDetailed Agenda and Course Materials \nDay 1 (Monday\, February 9th\, 2026)\n\n\n\n\nTime\nTopic\nSpeaker\n\n\n09:00 – 09:05\nWelcome\nMarc-André Hermanns\n\n\n09:05 – 09:35\nThe UNIX Shell\nMarc-André Hermanns\n\n\n10:30 – 10:45\nBreak\n\n\n\n10:45 – 12:15\nThe UNIX Shell (continued)\nMarc-André Hermanns\n\n\n12:15 – 13:15\nLunch Break\n\n\n\n13:15 – 14:45\nIntroduction to HPC\nMarc-André Hermanns\n\n\n14:45 – 15:00\nBreak\n\n\n\n15:00 – 16:30\nIntroduction to HPC (continued)\nMarc-André Hermanns\n\n\n\nDay 2 (Tuesday\, February 10th\, 2026)\n\n\n\nTime\nTopic\nSpeaker\n\n\n09:00 – 10:30\nIntroduction to HPC (continued)\nMarc-André Hermanns\n\n\n10:30 – 10:45\nBreak\n\n\n\n10:45 – 12:15\nIntroduction to HPC (continued)\nMarc-André Hermanns\n\n\n12:15 – 13:15\nLunch Break\n\n\n\n13:15 – 14:45\nIntroduction to HPC (continued)\nMarc-André Hermanns\n\n\n14:45 – 15:00\nBreak\n\n\n\n15:00 – 15:45\nIntroduction to JupyterHub\nAlvaro Frank\n\n\n15:45 – 16:30\nHPC Resources and Computing   Projects\nTim Cramer\n\n\n16:30\nClosing Remarks\nMarc-André Hermanns\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\nSeminarrooms 003/004\nErweiterungsgebäude Kop6\, IT Center\, RWTH Aachen University\nKopernikusstraße 6\, 52074 Aachen University\n\nRegistration\nOnline registration

SUMMARY:[:en]NHR4CES - Numerical Methods for Combustion[:]
DESCRIPTION:Name: Numerical Methods for Combustion \nDate: December 5\, 2025\, 2pm – 6pm; \nFormat: online \nMore Information & Register \n  \n\n  \nDescription\n\n\nShort abstract:\nIn the face of climate change and its undeniable threats to humanity\, the urgency for transitioning to CO2-free or carbon-neutral energy systems is paramount. \nInformation about SDL Energy Conversion

SUMMARY:aiXcelerate 2025
DESCRIPTION:in cooperation with \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nTopic: I/O and Data Handling for HPC and ML Codes (on CLAIX)\n\nDescription\nThe annual event aiXcelerate at RWTH Aachen University (NHR4CES@RWTH) is a tuning workshop for users of HPC systems. It comprises lectures that are open to everyone\, and hands-on parts where (invited) groups apply the learned concepts to their own (!) codes. This year\, aiXcelerate covers the topic “I/O and Data Handling for HPC and ML Codes” and focuses on using the RWTH’s HPC cluster “CLAIX”. \nPresentations (open to everyone)\nPresentations (see agenda below) give an introduction on I/O topics for HPC and ML codes. They cover\, e.g.\, an overview of available I/O solutions on CLAIX\, how they are best mapped to the I/O behavior of own codes\, and further tips and tricks.\nTalks are offered in a hybrid form: The presenters will do their talks in-person on the premises of the IT Center at RWTH Aachen University. Thus\, participants are very welcome to attend the presentations in-person\, too. Additionally\, presentations will be streamed live in online form. Hence\, participants can also attend remotely. Participants need to choose their setup (on-premise or online) during the registration process. \nCode & Tuning Activities (limited seats)\nThe sessions on “Code and Tuning Activities” (see agenda below) follow the principle of bring-your-own (BYO) code. They target at users with their own HPC or ML codes running on CLAIX and that (might) have (performance) issues with I/O and data handling. Participants of these sessions will closely work together with and get support by our HPC/ML experts to\, e.g.\, analyze the I/O performance of their codes and to tune the I/O and data handling of their codes.\nSince participants will work together with our experts\, this part can only be attended in-person and on-premise. We invite HPC and ML users with suitable compute time projects on CLAIX. Nevertheless\, other interested people are also welcome to register for this part of the workshop. However\, since seats are limited\, we reserve the right to only accept certain projects/ users for this workshop part. \nRequirements for “BYO Code”\nTo make good use of the time with our HPC/ML experts\, it is necessary (until the workshop date) that… \n\n … the brought code is already running on CLAIX (software & hardware environment).\n… a (test) dataset is available that (a) runs on few hardware ressources (e.g. CPUs or GPUs) for a short time (e.g.\, few minutes) and (b) still captures the I/O performance profile of a regular dataset by triggering the same production parts of the application.\n… all needed data is already transferred to one of the CLAIX’ file systems (HOME\, WORK\, HPCWORK).\n… at least one developer of the targeted application registered. Several people using the same application is also possible (please register separately).\n\nOrganization\n\nThere is no workshop fee.\nPresentations will be given in English. Slides will be available during or after the event (see “Course Material” below).\nPresentations are presented in hybrid form (see above).
