SUMMARY:[:en]NHR4CES - Process Mining and HPC clusters[:]
DESCRIPTION:Name: Process Mining and HPC clusters \nDate: December 9\, 09.00 am – 01.00 pm\, 2024 \nFormat: Online \nMore Information & Register \n  \n\n  \nDescription\nShort abstract: \nIntegrating process mining (PM) with High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters involves extracting SLURM-scheduled logs for PM analysis. Our findings indicate that HPC users underutilize SLURM’s capabilities as a Workflow Management System (WfMS)\, missing out on workflow benefits such as error reduction and time efficiency. Guiding users to run jobs with proper interdependencies on SLURM can enhance logging for more effective PM analysis.

SUMMARY:aiXcelerate 2024
DESCRIPTION:in cooperation with \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nTopic: Machine Learning on NVIDIA GPUs\n\nDescription\nThe annual event aiXcelerate at RWTH Aachen University (NHR4CES@RWTH) is a tuning workshop for HPC users. It comprises lectures that are open to everyone\, and hands-on parts where (invited) groups apply the learned concepts to their own codes. This year\, aiXcelerate covers the topic “Machine Learning (ML) on NVIDIA GPUs” and focuses on using the GPUs of RWTH’s HPC cluster “CLAIX” with frameworks such as PyTorch or Tensorflow. This workshop provides insights to performance analysis and performance tuning of ML codes (and is not an introduction to ML). aiXcelerate will take place with the support of NVIDIA from December 9th to 11th\, 2024. Catering is sponsored by NEC and NVIDIA. \nPresentations (open to everyone)\nThe talks are distributed across the morning sessions of the three days of aiXcelerate. The topic of the first day is “Analyzing Performance of ML Codes” and covers the usage of the automatically-running RWTH performance monitoring system\, as well as the usage of NVIDIA’s Nsight tool and how to find bottlenecks with it. The second day focuses on “Scaling ML Codes across Multiple GPUs/ Nodes”. Here\, approaches with PyTorch (Distributed) and Tensorflow + Horovod are presented to speedup ML codes by using more hardware in parallel. On the third day\, we will look at “Handling Datasets of ML Codes”. We will present the different options for storing and using ML data during runtime (on CLAIX). Furthermore\, the usage of check pointing in ML codes will be introduced to save the application’s state in certain intervals to provide fault tolerance. \nTalks are offered in a hybrid form: The presenters will do their talks in-person on the premises of the IT Center at RWTH Aachen University. Thus\, participants are very welcome to attend the presentations in-person\, too. Additionally\, presentations will be streamed live in online form. Hence\, participants can also attend remotely. Participants need to choose their setup (on-premise or online) during the registration process. \nCode & Tuning Activities (limited seats)\nThe sessions on “Code and Tuning Activities” (see agenda) target at users with their own ML codes (e.g.\, using PyTorch or Tensorflow) and follow the principle of bring-your-own (BYO) code. Participants of these sessions will closely work together with and get support by our HPC/ML experts to\, e.g.\, analyze the performance of their codes\, to tune the performance of their codes\, to scale their codes across multiple GPUs\, or to improve data handling of their codes. \nCode and tuning activities are scheduled for all three days of the aiXcelerate workshop to have sufficient time to work on the BYO codes. They start after the presentations in the late morning session and continue throughout the remainder of the day. Since participants will work together with our experts\, this part can only be attended in-person and on-premise. \nThis part focuses on ML users working on the RWTH HPC cluster CLAIX. We (will) invite ML users with suitable compute time projects on CLAIX. Nevertheless\, other interested people are also welcome to register for this part of the workshop. However\, since seats are limited\, we reserve the right to only accept certain projects/ users for this workshop part. \nRequirements\nTo make good use of the time with our HPC/ML experts\, it is necessary that… \n\n … the brought code is already running on CLAIX (software & hardware environment).\n… a (test) dataset is available that (a) runs on one or few GPUs for a short time (e.g.\, few minutes) and (b) still captures the performance profile of a regular dataset by triggering the same production parts of the application.\n… all needed data is already transferred to one of the CLAIX’ file systems (HOME\, WORK\, HPCWORK).\n… at least one developer of the targeted application registered. Several people using the same application is also possible (please register separately).\n\nSupport\nThe HPC/ML experts will work together with the participants (ML developers). Our experts are from the HPC team of the IT Center (NHR4CES@RWTH) and will be kindly supported by the HPC and ML expert Fabian Berressem from NVIDIA. \nOrganization\n\nThere is no workshop fee.\nPresentations will be given in English. SUMMARY:[:en]Introduction to High-Performance Computing 2025[:]
DESCRIPTION:This introduction provides basic information about high performance computing (HPC) at the RWTH Aachen University’s IT Center for different target groups and needs. It is the basis for the follow-up event PPCES 2025. It focus on CLAIX-2023\, the cluster that has been installed end of 2023 at the RWTH Aachen University’s IT Center. \nThe first part provides basic information about HPC resources and targets not only HPC users but also decision makers. It provides information for the participants to take strategic decisions concerning employment of HPC resources and filing applications for computing projects consuming a decent amount of resources. No prior knowledge is required to attend. \nThe second part is aimed at those who (want to) use HPC resources. It will enable participants to get a better understanding of the skill set they need. You will particularly learn about the most important details on using CLAIX-2023. Those who use to run their computing applications on local machines will learn how to run those applications on the RWTH Compute Cluster provided the necessary software licenses are in place. Generally\, this event is also meant to teach the HPC basics that are needed to take part in our more in-depth event PPCES and to help take decisions on which part of PPCES might be interesting for you. We expect participants to have a basic knowledge of Linux and experience with their applications on any other computing devices. You can find a basic tutorial for Linux here: \nLinux Tutorial \nAll presentations will be given in English. \nDetailed Agenda and Course Materials \nPart I\n \n\n\n\nTime\nTopic\nSpeaker\n\n\n09:00 – 09:05\nWelcome\nTim Cramer\n\n\n09:05 – 09:35\nHPC Architecture Basics\nTim Cramer\n\n\n09:35 – 10:05\nStorage   Strategy for Users\nPhilipp Martin\n\n\n10:05– 10:10\nBreak\n\n\n\n10:10 – 10:55\nHPC Resources and Computing   Projects\nTim Cramer\n\n\n10:55 – 11:30\nIntroduction to JupyterHub\nAlvaro Frank\n\n\n11:30 – 12:00\nAccess to CLAIX and Using multi-factor Authentication\nTim Cramer\n\n\n12:00 – 13:00\nLunch Break\n\n\n\n\nPart II\n \n\n\n\nTime\nTopic\nSpeaker\n\n\n13:00 – 13:30\nCluster Software Environment HPC\nFelix Tomski\n\n\n13:30 – 13:50\nContainer Usage\nSven Hansen\n\n\n13:50 – 14:30\nIntroduction   to Slurm\nAlvaro Frank\n\n\n14:30 – 14:45\nBreak\n\n\n\n14:45 – 15:30\nParallel Programming Overview\nTim Cramer\n\n\n15:30 – 16:15\nPerformance   Metrics & Measurements\nFelix Tomski\n\n\n16:15 – 16:30\nClosing   Session\nTim Cramer\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n— online — \nhttps://rwth.zoom-x.de/j/62591981826?pwd=nlQWblapDC2eyw9pD6xbbM9AKN6Sob.1 \nMeeting-ID: 625 9198 1826 \nKenncode: 748755 \nRegistration\nOnline registration

SUMMARY:PPCES 2025
DESCRIPTION:in cooperation with \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nParallel Programming in Computational Engineering and Science (PPCES)\nMarch 10th – 14th\, 2025\n \n\nThis one week event will continue the tradition of previous annual week-long events that take place in Aachen every spring since 2001. We will cover the basics of parallel programming using OpenMP and MPI in Fortran and C/C++ and a first step towards performance tuning. Furthermore\, we will embrace current topics in machine & deep learning. Hands-on exercises for each topic will be included. \nThe contents of the courses are generally applicable but will be specialized towards the compute cluster CLAIX which is the current system installed at RWTH’s IT Center. It might be helpful to read through the information which is provided during the HPC introduction on March 4th 2025. This is especially true if you want to actively use CLAIX after this event. \nTopics\nThe Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the de-facto standard for programming large HPC systems. We will introduce the basic concepts and give an overview of some advanced features. \nOpenMP is a widely used approach for programming shared memory architectures\, supported by most compilers nowadays. We will cover the basics of the programming paradigm as well as some advanced topics such as programming NUMA machines. The compute nodes of the RWTH HPC Cluster (aka CLAIX) contain an increasing number of cores and thus we consider shared memory programming a vital alternative for applications that cannot be easily parallelized with MPI. \nMachine & Deep Learning: We provide a fundamental introduction into machine and deep learning approaches as well as data processing techniques that support dataset preparation or model selection for training and inference. It covers the basic concepts for supervised and unsupervised learning such as classification\, regression\, and clustering to get a feeling which technique is appropriate for a particular problem. Additionally\, we conduct several hands-on exercises with common frameworks such as scikit-learn and PyTorch on our recent HPC Cluster CLAIX. In these exercises\, we demonstrate how to define models\, construct dataset and training pipelines or utilize monitoring and visualization of the training results\, e.g.\, with Tensorboard. For the deep learning exercises\, we start by training on a single GPU first. If that is not enough\, we also show how to scale up distributed training onto multiple compute nodes or GPUs. \nOrganization\n\nThere is no seminar fee.\nPresentations will be given in English. Slides will be available during or after the event.\nThis is an in-person event and will be held on the RWTH IT Center premises (see below). Coffee\, tea\, and soda are sponsored by NEC throughout the event.\nYou can/must register per topic\, i.e.\, MPI (Mon + Tue)\, OpenMP (Wed + Thu)\, and ML/DL (Fri).\nFor more details on the target audience\, prerequistes and gained skills\, see the “Skills” sections below (per topic).\n\nGuest Speakers\nWe are happy to announce our guest speaker: Ruud van der Pas (Oracle Linux Engineering) \nAgenda\nDay 1+2: MPI\n\n\n\nMonday\, March 10\nDay 1: MPI Part I\n\n\n\n09:00 – 09:10\nWelcome & Organization\nMarc-André Hermanns (RWTH)\n\n\n09:10 – 10:10\nIntroduction into Parallel Computing \n\nVideo: see section “Recordings” below\n\n\nRuud van der Pas (Oracle Linux Engineering)\n\n\n10:10 – 10:30\nMPI Basics – Part 1 \n\nVideo: similar content as part of “MPI in Small Bites” (see section “Recordings” below)\n\n\nMarc-André Hermanns (RWTH)\n\n\n10:30 – 11:00\nCoffee Break\n\n\n11:00 – 12:10\nMPI Basics – Part 2 (incl. SUMMARY:[:en]NHR4CES - Methods of AutoML and how to utilize them[:]
DESCRIPTION:Name: Methods of AutoML and how to utilize them \nDate: March 20\, 2025 \nFormat: Online \nMore Information & Register \n  \n\n  \nDescription\n\n\nShort abstract:\nMachine Learning methods are on the rise in the scientific and HPC community due to several reasons\, e.g. to speed up computations or help researchers to handle lots of data. However\, although there are tons of courses on ML-methods\, using these methods optimally requires years of experience which most of the users will not or don’t want to gather. This workshop will teach you AutoML-methods which aim to automate ML-pipelines\, thus helping non-experts to use ML-models in (near) optimal ways with a minimum of knowledge required. This workshop aims to introduce AutoML-methods which can be used out of the box and give some theoretical intuition on how they work and what they can be used for.
