SUMMARY:Training: Visualization and Analysis of Atomistic Simulation Data in OVITO
DESCRIPTION:Name: Training: Visualization and Analysis of Atomistic Simulation Data in OVITO \nEvent type: Workshop \nDate: November 15 to 17\, 2022\n \nTime: 1pm – 5pm \nFormat: Online via Zoom\n \nTarget Audience: HPC user\n \nContact Person: Dr. Daniel Utt \nRegistration \n*More information* \n \n\n  \nDesciption  \n\nPost-processing and analysis of atomistic simulations are essential steps to extract knowledge from the computed trajectories. Many commonly used algorithms are already implemented in OVITO and ready to be used on large datasets containing up to billions of atoms. \nDuring day 1 you will learn how to load your simulation outputs into OVITO and process them in the graphical user interface using the built-in algorithms. We will discuss the most important tools and practice using them in hands-on exercises. \n\n\nOn day 2 we will look at the development of custom processing algorithms using OVITO’s Python extension interface\, which lets you solve more complex analysis tasks. \nOn the last day we will step away from the graphical user interface and take a look at automated workflow scripts. This feature of OVITO lets you generate batch analysis pipelines that may be executed on HPC infrastructure to perform computationally intensive data analysis and visualization tasks in a reproducible way.

SUMMARY:NHR4CES Community Workshop 2023
DESCRIPTION:Title: NHR4CES Community Workshop 2023 – Machine Learning in Computational Fluid Dynamics \nEvent type: Workshop \nDate & Time: February 28\, 2023\, 1.30pm – 5.30pm and March 1\, 2023\, 9.00am – 1.30pm\n \nFormat: Online\n \nContact: office@nhr.tu-darmstadt.de \nContact persons: Jonas Seng\, Dr. Martin Smuda and Ludovico Nista \nRegistration \n*More information*  \n\n  \nDesciption  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBig data and Machine Learning (ML) are driving comprehensive economic and social transformations and are rapidly becoming a core technology for scientific computing\, with numerous opportunities to advance different research areas such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). \nThe combination of CFD with ML has been already applied to several CFD configurations and is a promising research direction with the potential to enable the advancement of so far unsolved problems\, thanks to the ability of deep models to learn in a hierarchical manner with little to no need for prior knowledge.\nHowever\, this approach presents a paradigm shift to change the focus of CFD from time-consuming feature detection to in-depth examinations of relevant features\, enabling deeper insight into the physics involved in complex natural processes. \nThe workshop is designed to highlight some of the areas of the highest potential impact\, including improving turbulence and combustion closure modeling\, developing reduced-order models\, and designing versatile neural network architectures. Emerging ML areas that are promising for CFD\, as well as some potential limitations\, will be discussed.\nThe workshop aims at gathering different research groups\, by providing a venue to exchange new ideas\, discuss challenges\, and expose this new research field to a broader community.

SUMMARY:[:de]Introduction to High-Performance Computing 2023[:]
DESCRIPTION:This entry is only available in Deutsch. This introduction provides basic information about high-performance computing (HPC) at the RWTH Aachen University’s IT Center for different target groups and needs. It is the basis for the follow-up event PPCES 2023. It is focused on CLAIX-2018 the cluster that has been installed end of 2018 and extended in 2019 at the RWTH Aachen University’s IT Center. \nThe event will be in person only (NOT online or hybrid)! \nThe first part provides basic information about HPC resources and targets not only HPC users but also decision makers. It provides information for the participants to take strategic decisions concerning employment of HPC resources and filing applications for computing projects consuming a decent amount of resources. No prior knowledge is required to attend. \nThe second part is aimed at those who (want to) use HPC resources and those who (want to) program HPC resources (developers). It will enable participants  to get a better understanding of the skill set they need. Furthermore\, it will enable admins and supporters to improve their support of HPC users by having a better understanding of HPC activities. You will particularly learn about the most important details on using CLAIX-2018. Those who use to run their computing applications on local machines will learn how to run those applications on the RWTH Compute Cluster provided the necessary software licenses are in place. Generally\, this event is also meant to teach the HPC basics that are needed to take part in our more in-depth event PPCES and to help take decisions on which part of PPCES might be interesting for you. We expect participants to have a basic knowledge of Linux and experience with their applications on any other computing devices. \nAll presentations will be given in English. \nCourse Information & Registration \nPart 1 (Morning Session) 11:00 – ~12:30\n \nTarget: Enable participants to make decisions concerning the employment of HPC resources and to file applications for computing projects \nTarget groups: HPC decision makers\, supporters\, domain scientists\, developers\, users\, admins and students. \nOverview \n\nHigh performance computer architecture basics\nCLAIX 2018\nStorage for HPC\nApplication software availability\nAccess\, project categories and submission\n\n\nPart 2 (Afternoon Session) 14:00 – ~16:45\n \nTarget: provide the basic knowledge to use the new cluster\, give a better understanding of the skill set needed for develop HPC applications\,  enable admins and supporters to better help and understand HPC users \nTarget groups: HPC supporters\, domain scientists\, developers\, users\, admins and students. \nContent overview \n\nShort introduction to parallel programming\nOverview on OpenMP\, MPI and GPU-Programming\nPerformance metrics and measurements\nCompiler optimizations and switches\nBatch job submission\nProcess and thread allocation in batch jobs\nOutlook on follow-up events: PPCES and aiXcelerate\n\nDetailed Agenda and Course Materials \nPart I \n\n\n\n\n11:00 – 11:05\nWelcome\nTim Cramer\n\n\n11:05 – 11:30\nHPC Architecture Basics\nTim Cramer\n\n\n11:30 – 12:00\nStorage Strategy for Users\nPhilipp Martin\n\n\n12:00 – 12:45\nHPC Resources and Computing Projects \nTim Cramer\n\n\n12:45 – 14:00\nBreak\n\n\n\n\n\nPart II \n\n\n\n\n14:00 – 14:20\nCluster Software Environment HPC\nDaniel Schürhoff\n\n\n14:20 – 14:35\nUsing multi-factor authorization for Claix \nTim Cramer\n\n\n14:35 – 15:00\nIntroduction to Slurm\nAlvaro Frank\n\n\n15:00 – 15:10\nBreak\n\n\n\n15:10 – 15:55\nParallel Programming Overview\nTim Cramer\n\n\n15:55 – 16:40\nPerformance Metrics & Measurements\nDaniel Schürhoff\n\n\n16:40 – 16:45\nClosing Session\nTim Cramer\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\nIT  Center RWTH Aachen University\nKopernikusstraße 6 \n\nSeminar Room 3+4\n— in-person only! — \n\nMaterial\nSlide decks (no video recordings!) are published\, s. above. \nRegistration\n\nRegistration here \n  \n

SUMMARY:[:en]1st Rocky HPC Migration Course[:]
DESCRIPTION:Since CentOS 7\, the Linux Operating System of CLAIX\, is outdated\, and since CentOS Linux 8 reached End Of Life (EOL)\, we have to shift to a new Linux distribution.  We have selected Rocky Linux 8.7\, which is also Red Hat Enterprise compatible. \nGoing hand in hand with this change\, we also prepared the shift to a new software environment based on EasyBuild and Lmod. These tools are also widely used at other HPC centers. We expect them to improve the user experience and the maintainability from the administrator’s perspective. \nHowever\, for you as a user\, both changes require that you \n(1.) learn how to use the new module system (e.g.\, names of the modules changed\, toolchains\, etc.) and \n(2.) recompile your software and \n(3.) revise and possibly modify your batch scripts accordingly. \nUnderstanding that you need time to prepare for these changes\, we will offer support for the old (CentOS 7) and the new (Rocky Linux 8) environment in parallel for a transition period of approx. 7 weeks\, ending on April 30th\, 2023. During this period\, more and more compute nodes will be migrated to the new environment. Consequently\, the waiting times for jobs scheduled to run in the old environment might increase over time. \nIn this online course we will present an overview on the changes. \nIn order to join the Zoom meeting\, you can use the following link: \nhttps://rwth.zoom.us/j/91453505636\nMeeting-ID: 914 5350 5636\nKenncode: 690220 \nNo registration required. \nFind the slidedeck here

DESCRIPTION:Parallel Programming in Computational Engineering and Science (PPCES) 2023\n \nAbout PPCES\nThis one week event will continue the tradition of previous annual week-long events that take place in Aachen every spring since 2001. We will cover the basics of parallel programming using OpenMP and MPI in Fortran and C/C++ and a first step towards performance tuning as well as current topics in AI/machine learning. Hands-on exercises for each topic will be included. \n  \nThis is an in-person event and will be held on the RWTH IT-Center premises (see below). \n  \nThe contents of the courses are generally applicable but will be specialized towards CLAIX the compute cluster which is the current system installed at the RWTH’s IT Center. It might be helpful to read through the information which was provided during the HPC introduction on March 7 this year. This is especially true if you want to actively use CLAIX after this event. \nOpenMP is a widely used approach for programming shared memory architectures\, supported by most compilers nowadays. We will cover the basics of the programming paradigm as well as some advanced topics such as programming NUMA machines. The nodes of the RWTH Compute Cluster contain an increasing number of cores and thus we consider shared memory programming a vital alternative for applications that cannot be easily parallelized with MPI. We also expect a growing number of application codes to combine MPI and OpenMP for clusters of nodes with a growing number of cores. \nThe Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the de-facto standard for programming large HPC systems. We will introduce the basic concepts and give an overview of some advanced features. Also covered is hybrid parallelization\, i.e.\, the combination of MPI and shared memory programming\, which is gaining popularity as the number of cores per cluster node grows. \nMachine Learning: We provide an overview to end-to-end deep learning with the latest version of Tensorflow/Keras. It covers the basic concepts to define models with Keras  and data pipelines with Tensorflow’s “Dataset”\, and to visualize the results with Tensorboard while training. If training on one node or GPU is not enough\,  we show how to scale up/out distributed training onto multiple compute nodes  and GPUs with Horovod. Furthermore\, we provide an introduction to scikit-learn\, with an overview of  different machine learning algorithms it provides and how to utilize it on GPUs  with H2O4GPU. There will also be a small section on PyTorch. The training courses consist of a hands-on exercises to be run directly on  RWTH infrastructure. \nGuest Speaker\nWe are happy to announce two guest speakers: \n\nGeorg Zitzlsberger (IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava) on Machine Learning\nRuud van der Pas (Oracle Linux Engineering) on OpenMP\n\nAgenda\nDay 1+2: OpenMP\n\n\n\nMonday\, March 13\nDay 1: OpenMP Part I\n\n\n\n09:00 – 09:10\nOrganization PPCES 2023\nPhilipp Martin\n\n\n09:10 – 10:30\nOpenMP Basics part 1\nChristian Terboven\n\n\n11:00 – 12:00\nOpenMP Basics part 2 (incl. SUMMARY:[:en]3rd Rocky HPC Migration Course[:]

SUMMARY:[:en]Machine Learning Consultancy Hour #1[:]
DESCRIPTION:Machine Learning (ML) methods are being used frequently in research these days. However\, often non-experts in ML are faced with the problem of designing and building highly complex models and ML-environments to utilize useful features that ML brings. A high invest of time is needed to acquire the knowledge required to develop ML-models and the environment in which they can be deployed. \nTo support researchers from fields other than ML\, the CSG Data Science provides regular Consultancy Hours where researchers can pitch their specific ML-related problems to us. \nBased on the pitch our team will support the presenters afterwards in a consultative manner. \nIn order to join the Zoom meeting\, you can use the following link: \nhttps://tu-darmstadt.zoom.us/j/68557734988?pwd=aVc1S0hMczNwVC9mS3ZIajd0UDJ2Zz09
