SUMMARY:[:en]NHR4CES - Materials Science with Advanced Data Management and Data Science Techniques[:]
DESCRIPTION:Name: Materials Science with Advanced Data Management and Data Science Techniques \nDate: May 07-08\, 2025 \nFormat: Online \nMore Information & Register \n  \n\n  \nDescription\n\n\nWe invite you to our NHR4CES Community Workshop 2025! This year’s topic is Materials Science with Advanced Data Management and Data Science Techniques. The online workshop is organized by SDL Materials Design\, CSG Data Management and CSG Data Science and Machine Learning. The workshop will take place on May 07\, 1pm-5pm and May 08\, 9am-1pm. \n\nWith the increasing computational power\, an abundance of data has become available in different research fields. To handle such an ever increasing amount of data\, tools such as data management\, machine learning and/or workflow managers receive increasing attention. In the field of materials science such approaches allow to investigate a wide range of materials and their properties in a systematic manner. The workflow managers are used in high-throughput calculations leading to the generation of huge amount of data. Although\, high-throughput calculations are limited by the structure size. Structures with >10^3 atoms are limited by the computational resources. Researchers use the generated data and/or intelligent data mining as an input to machine learning techniques to investigate material properties\, beyond limitations imposed by computational resources. \n\n\nAdditionally\, through the collection of rich metadata in all steps of the workflow\, results can be easily reproduced and reused by other researchers. This workshop is going to cover major parts of a data life cycle from generation of data via automatized workflow\, their collection using data manager solutions\, and their processing and/or re-using via application of machine learning while following the FAIR data principles.

SUMMARY:[:en]NHR4CES - Distributed- and Federated Learning[:]
DESCRIPTION:Name: Distributed- and Federated Learning \nDate: June 05\, 2025 \nFormat: online \nMore Information & Register \n  \n\n  \nDescription\n\n\nShort abstract:\nToday more data is gathered than ever before. This does not only hold for economic data\, but also for research-data. At the same time\, the need for ML-methods is higher than ever in research and other domains. Often the datasets used in ML-tasks are too big to be processed by a single work-station or even a single server. Distributed- and Federated Learning help to handle large datasets in a distributed way\, even with privacy-guarantees in the case of Federated Learning. This workshop will introduce methods of both\, Distributed Learning and Federated Learning by giving both\, a theoretical and practical view on these learning-frameworks.

SUMMARY:aiXcelerate 2025
DESCRIPTION:in cooperation with \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nTopic: I/O and Data Handling for HPC and ML Codes (on CLAIX)\n\nDescription\nThe annual event aiXcelerate at RWTH Aachen University (NHR4CES@RWTH) is a tuning workshop for users of HPC systems. It comprises lectures that are open to everyone\, and hands-on parts where (invited) groups apply the learned concepts to their own (!) codes. This year\, aiXcelerate covers the topic “I/O and Data Handling for HPC and ML Codes” and focuses on using the RWTH’s HPC cluster “CLAIX”. \nPresentations (open to everyone)\nPresentations (see agenda below) give an introduction on I/O topics for HPC and ML codes. They cover\, e.g.\, an overview of available I/O solutions on CLAIX\, how they are best mapped to the I/O behavior of own codes\, and further tips and tricks.\nTalks are offered in a hybrid form: The presenters will do their talks in-person on the premises of the IT Center at RWTH Aachen University. Thus\, participants are very welcome to attend the presentations in-person\, too. Additionally\, presentations will be streamed live in online form. Hence\, participants can also attend remotely. Participants need to choose their setup (on-premise or online) during the registration process. \nCode & Tuning Activities (limited seats)\nThe sessions on “Code and Tuning Activities” (see agenda below) follow the principle of bring-your-own (BYO) code. They target at users with their own HPC or ML codes running on CLAIX and that (might) have (performance) issues with I/O and data handling. Participants of these sessions will closely work together with and get support by our HPC/ML experts to\, e.g.\, analyze the I/O performance of their codes and to tune the I/O and data handling of their codes.\nSince participants will work together with our experts\, this part can only be attended in-person and on-premise. We invite HPC and ML users with suitable compute time projects on CLAIX. Nevertheless\, other interested people are also welcome to register for this part of the workshop. However\, since seats are limited\, we reserve the right to only accept certain projects/ users for this workshop part. \nRequirements for “BYO Code”\nTo make good use of the time with our HPC/ML experts\, it is necessary (until the workshop date) that… \n\n … the brought code is already running on CLAIX (software & hardware environment).\n… a (test) dataset is available that (a) runs on few hardware ressources (e.g. CPUs or GPUs) for a short time (e.g.\, few minutes) and (b) still captures the I/O performance profile of a regular dataset by triggering the same production parts of the application.\n… all needed data is already transferred to one of the CLAIX’ file systems (HOME\, WORK\, HPCWORK).\n… at least one developer of the targeted application registered. Several people using the same application is also possible (please register separately).\n\nOrganization\n\nThere is no workshop fee.\nPresentations will be given in English. Slides will be available during or after the event (see “Course Material” below).\nPresentations are presented in hybrid form (see above). Please choose your setup during the registration process.\nCode activities are in-person on-premise only.\nPresentations and code activities focus on using the RWTH’s HPC cluster “CLAIX”.\n\nDate & Venue\nDate: December 2nd (and December 3rd)\, 2025\nVenue: IT Center of RWTH Aachen University\, Kopernikusstr. 6\, 52074 Aachen\, seminar rooms 3 + 4 (or online via Zoom/Webex) \nRegistration\nRegistration link (via our NHR4CES website): https://eveeno.com/aixcelerate_2025 \nDuring the registration\, please specify whether you want to participate in-person or online. Please also withdraw your registration in the registration system using the link that you got in your confirmation e-mail (or let us know) if you cannot attend anymore. That will help us a lot in preparing the event (seats\, catering and so on). Thanks! (Here are further instructions how to change or cancel your registration.) \nRegistration closing date: November 24th\, 2025\n \nAgenda\nAgenda is subject to slight changes. \nDay 1: Tuesday\, December 2nd\, 2025\n\n\n\nTime\nTopic\nSpeaker\n\n\n9:00 – 9:05\nWelcome\nSandra Wienke (RWTH)\n\n\n9:05 – 10:00\nDoes I/O Matter to Me?\nPhilipp Martin (RWTH)\n\n\n10:00 – 10:30\nStorage and I/O Technologies on CLAIX\nPhilipp Martin (RWTH)\n\n\n10:30 – 11:00\nCoffee Break\n\n\n11:00 – 12:00\nTips & Tricks & Tools with respect to I/O\nPhilipp Martin (RWTH)\n\n\n12:00 – 12:30\nFrom Thousands of Small Files to Few Very Big Files\nJannis Klinkenberg (RWTH)\n\n\nCode Activities (on-premise only)\n\n\n12:30 – 13:30\nLunch Break\n\n\n13:30 – 15:00\nCode Activities (BYO Code: Tuning with Experts)\n\n\n15:00 – 15:30\nCoffee Break\n\n\n15:30 – 17:30\nCode Activities (BYO Code: Tuning with Experts)\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:[:en]NHR4CES - Numerical Methods for Combustion[:]
DESCRIPTION:Name: Numerical Methods for Combustion \nDate: December 5\, 2025\, 2pm – 6pm; \nFormat: online \nMore Information & Register \n  \n\n  \nDescription\n\n\nShort abstract:\nIn the face of climate change and its undeniable threats to humanity\, the urgency for transitioning to CO2-free or carbon-neutral energy systems is paramount. While the future of energy conversion will be largely dominated by renewable sources\, such as wind and solar power\, combustion technologies will continue to play a crucial role in meeting the world’s growing energy demands\, especially in the near term. The expected rise in alternative fuels—such as biofuels\, e-fuels\, and green hydrogen—demands a deeper understanding of combustion processes to ensure cleaner\, safer\, and more efficient energy generation. Accurately simulating combustion\, however\, is a formidable challenge due to its inherently multi-physics nature\, involving complex interactions between turbulence\, chemistry\, and multi-species flows. \nThis workshop will focus on advanced numerical methods for modeling and simulating combustion phenomena in high-performance computing environments. Participants will gain insights into cutting-edge techniques and numerical methods\, covering topics such as combustion closure modeling\, load-balancing techniques\, soot formation\, and more. The workshop aims to gather different research groups\, providing a venue to exchange new ideas\, discuss challenges\, and expose this new research field to a broader community. \nInformation about SDL Energy Conversion
