SUMMARY:[:en]NHR4CES: Machine Learning in Combustion[:]
DESCRIPTION:Name: Machine Learning in Combustion \nDate: November 09 & 10\, 2023\n \nTime: 2 pm – 6 pm \nFormat: Online \nMore Information \n  \n\n  \nDescription\nShort abstract: \nBig data and Machine Learning (ML) are driving comprehensive economic and social transformations and are rapidly becoming a core technology for scientific computing\, with numerous opportunities to advance different research areas\, such as combustion modeling. The combination of combustion applications with ML has been already applied to several Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) configurations and is a promising research direction with the potential to enable the advancement of so far unsolved problems\, thanks to the ability of deep models to learn in a hierarchical manner with little to no need for prior knowledge. However\, this approach presents a paradigm shift to change the focus of CFD from time-consuming feature detection to in-depth examinations of relevant features\, enabling deeper insight into the physics involved in complex natural processes. \nThis training is designed to provide basic background on machine learning applications\, highlighting some of the areas of the highest potential impact. Emerging ML areas that are promising for combustion modeling\, such as reduced-order modeling advancements\, versatile neural network architectures developments\, as well as some potential limitations\, will be discussed. The workshop aims to gather different research groups\, providing a venue to exchange new ideas\, discuss challenges\, and expose this new research field to a broader community. \n  \nClick here to register\n

DESCRIPTION:Name: CFD Training Series: Introduction to Kernel-based approximation methods with applications to fluid dynamics \nDate: November 23\, 2023 \n \nTime: 1.00 pm – 5.00 pm \nFormat: hybrid \nMore Information \n  \n\n  \nDescription\nShort abstract: \n\n\nWhen data is provided in an unstructured format or is high-dimensional\, classical interpolation or approximation schemes as Finite-Element Methods (FEM) struggle to be accurate and efficient. An alternative is provided by kernel-based approaches in the Reproducing Kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) framework. Common applications range from support vector machines in context of machine learning to reconstruction of image data. In this course\, we will introduce the framework for kernel-based approximation schemes and discuss how one can implement them efficiently. At the end we will look at possible applications of kernel-based methods in context of fluid dynamics and particle methods. \n\n\nClick here to register online\nClick here to register on site

SUMMARY:[:en]Machine Learning Consultancy Hour #9[:]
DESCRIPTION:Machine Learning (ML) methods are being used frequently in research these days. However\, often non-experts in ML are faced with the problem of designing and building highly complex models and ML-environments to utilize useful features that ML brings. A high invest of time is needed to acquire the knowledge required to develop ML-models and the environment in which they can be deployed. \nTo support researchers from fields other than ML\, the CSG Data Science provides regular Consultancy Hours where researchers can pitch their specific ML-related problems to us. \nBased on the pitch our team will support the presenters afterwards in a consultative manner. \nIn order to join the Zoom meeting\, you can use the following link: \nhttps://tu-darmstadt.zoom.us/j/68557734988?pwd=aVc1S0hMczNwVC9mS3ZIajd0UDJ2Zz09

SUMMARY:[:en]NHR4CES: Process Mining and Scientific Workflows running on the HPC cluster[:]
DESCRIPTION:Name: Process Mining and Scientific Workflows running on the HPC cluster \nDate: December 11\, 2023\n \nTime: 9 a.m to 1 p.m. \nFormat: Online \nMore Information \n  \n\n  \nDescription\nShort abstract: The goal of Process Mining is to turn event data into insights and actions. On the other side\, there exist scientific workflows running on HPC clusters. But\, why do we need process mining to analyze scientific workflows running on HPC clusters? For two reasons\, documentation of scientific workflows and detection of bottlenecks that slow down the execution of scientific workflows. That is why we are doing to implement a cockpit to monitor HPC processes with Process Mining techniques. Another perspective is supporting Process Mining workflows for scientific experiments to facilitate the use and also improve the performance of Process Mining techniques. \n  \nClick here to register\n

SUMMARY:[:en]Introduction to High-Performance Computing 2024[:]
DESCRIPTION:This introduction provides basic information about high-performance computing (HPC) at the RWTH Aachen University’s IT Center for different target groups and needs. It is the basis for the follow-up event PPCES 2024. It focus on CLAIX-2023\, the cluster that has been installed end of 2023 at the RWTH Aachen University’s IT Center and will be available in Q1/24. \nThe first part (Monday) provides basic information about HPC resources and targets not only HPC users but also decision makers. It provides information for the participants to take strategic decisions concerning employment of HPC resources and filing applications for computing projects consuming a decent amount of resources. No prior knowledge is required to attend. \nThe second part (Tuesday) is aimed at those who (want to) use HPC resources. It will enable participants to get a better understanding of the skill set they need. You will particularly learn about the most important details on using CLAIX-2023. Those who use to run their computing applications on local machines will learn how to run those applications on the RWTH Compute Cluster provided the necessary software licenses are in place. Generally\, this event is also meant to teach the HPC basics that are needed to take part in our more in-depth event PPCES and to help take decisions on which part of PPCES might be interesting for you. We expect participants to have a basic knowledge of Linux and experience with their applications on any other computing devices. You can find a basic tutorial for Linux here: \nLinux Tutorial \nAll presentations will be given in English. \nDetailed Agenda (preliminary) and Course Materials \nPart I (Monday\, February 5th)\n \n\n\n\nTime\nTopic\nSpeaker\n\n\n13:30 – 13:35\nWelcome Day 1\nTim Cramer\n\n\n13:35 – 14:05\nHPC Architecture Basics\nTim Cramer\n\n\n14:05 – 14:35\nStorage   Strategy for Users\nPhilipp Martin\n\n\n14:35– 14:40\nBreak\n\n\n\n14:40 – 15:25\nHPC Resources and Computing   Projects\nTim Cramer\n\n\n15:25 – 16:00\nIntroduction to JupyterHub\nAlvaro Frank\n\n\n\nPart II (Tuesday\, February 6th)\n \n\n\n\nTime\nTopic\nSpeaker\n\n\n09:00 – 09:05\nWelcome Day 2\nTim Cramer\n\n\n09:05 – 09:35\nAccess to CLAIX and Using multi-factor Authentication\nTim Cramer\n\n\n09:35 – 10:05\nCluster   Software Environment HPC\nFelix Tomski\n\n\n10:05 – 10:45\nIntroduction   to Slurm\nAlvaro Frank\n\n\n10:45 – 11:00\nBreak\n\n\n\n11:00 – 11:45\nParallel   Programming Overview\nTim Cramer\n\n\n11:45 – 12:30\nPerformance   Metrics & Measurements\nFelix Tomski\n\n\n12:30 – 12:45\nClosing   Session\nTim Cramer\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n— online — \nhttps://rwth.zoom-x.de/j/64418645137 \nMeeting-ID: 644 1864 5137 \nKenncode: 018561 \nRegistration\nOnline registration

SUMMARY:PPCES 2024
DESCRIPTION:in cooperation with \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nParallel Programming in Computational Engineering and Science (PPCES)\nMarch 11th – 15th\, 2024\n \nAbout PPCES\nThis one week event will continue the tradition of previous annual week-long events that take place in Aachen every spring since 2001. We will cover the basics of parallel programming using OpenMP and MPI in Fortran and C/C++ and a first step towards performance tuning. Furthermore\, we will embrace current topics in machine & deep learning. Hands-on exercises for each topic will be included. \nThe contents of the courses are generally applicable but will be specialized towards the compute cluster CLAIX which is the current system installed at the RWTH’s IT Center. It might be helpful to read through the information which is provided during the HPC introduction on February 5th and 6th 2024. This is especially true if you want to actively use CLAIX after this event. \nTopics\nOpenMP is a widely used approach for programming shared memory architectures\, supported by most compilers nowadays. We will cover the basics of the programming paradigm as well as some advanced topics such as programming NUMA machines. The nodes of the RWTH Compute Cluster contain an increasing number of cores and thus we consider shared memory programming a vital alternative for applications that cannot be easily parallelized with MPI. We also expect a growing number of application codes to combine MPI and OpenMP for clusters of nodes with a growing number of cores. \nThe Message Passing Interface (MPI) is the de-facto standard for programming large HPC systems. We will introduce the basic concepts and give an overview of some advanced features. Also covered is hybrid parallelization\, i.e.\, the combination of MPI and shared memory programming\, which is gaining popularity as the number of cores per cluster node grows. \nMachine & Deep Learning: We provide a fundamental introduction into machine and deep learning approaches as well as data processing techniques that support dataset preparation or model selection for training and inference. It covers the basic concepts for supervised and unsupervised learning such as classification\, regression\, and clustering to get a feeling which technique is appropriate for a particular problem. Additionally\, we conduct several hands-on exercises with common frameworks such as scikit-learn and PyTorch on our recent HPC infrastructure that is equipped with powerful Intel Sapphire Rapid CPUs and NVIDIA H100 GPUs. In these exercises\, we demonstrate how to define models\, construct dataset and training pipelines or utilize monitoring and visualization of the training results\, e.g.\, with Tensorboard. For the deep learning exercises\, we start by training on a single GPU first. If that is not enough\, we also show how to scale up distributed training onto multiple compute nodes or GPUs. \nOrganization\n\nThere is no seminar fee.\nPresentations will be given in English. Slides will be available during or after the event.\nThis is an in-person event and will be held on the RWTH IT Center premises (see below). Coffee\, tea\, and soda are sponsored by NEC throughout the event.\nYou can/must register per topic\, i.e.\, OpenMP (Mon + Tue)\, MPI (Wed + Thur)\, and ML/DL (Fri).\nFor more details on the target audience\, prerequistes and gained skills\, see the “Skills” sections below (per topic).\n\nGuest Speakers\nWe are happy to announce our guest speaker: Ruud van der Pas (Oracle Linux Engineering) \nAgenda\nAgenda is still subject to small changes. \nDay 1+2: OpenMP\n\n\n\nMonday\, March 11\nDay 1: OpenMP Part I\n\n\n\n09:00 – 09:10\nWelcome & Organization \nOpenMP Intro\nChristian Terboven (RWTH)\n\n\n09:10 – 10:10\nIntroduction into Parallel Computing\nRuud van der Pas (Oracle Linux Engineering)\n\n\n10:40 – 12:00\nOpenMP Basics – Part 1 \n\nOverview\nParallel Region\nWorksharing\nScoping\nCompilers + Exercises\n\n\nChristian Terboven (RWTH)\n\n\n13:30 – 14:30\nOpenMP Basics – Part 2 (incl.
