Now the popular service, which enables the collaborative editing of LaTeX documents, is going into regular operation. In collaboration between the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University and the Technical University of Darmstadt, Overleaf offers its users the possibility to work together on scientific publications without having to perform a local installation.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog post you will learn more about the features and innovations that come with the regular operation of Overleaf.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00549f;\">What Is Overleaf and What Features Does the Service Offer?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Overleaf is a collaborative online editor for LaTeX documents that allows users to work together on scientific publications. LaTeX is a widely used typesetting language that is especially popular for scientific documents. Collaborating on LaTeX documents can be challenging, especially when multiple people want to work on them simultaneously. Overleaf provides the solution by providing a simple and efficient online editing tool.<\/p>\n<p>With Overleaf, users can create and edit their LaTeX documents online in the browser. The collaborative feature allows multiple people to work on the same document at the same time, making changes and adding comments. This enables efficient collaboration, especially in scientific projects where several people are involved.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00549f;\">Innovations in Regular Operation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Overleaf officially went live on February 6, 2024. In pilot operation, users were initially limited to 250 people. With the transition to productive operation, up to 500 people can now use the service at Darmstadt University of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted, however, that regular operation has some differences from the cloud version and a limited contingent of licenses is available. The differences include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Display of external collaborators as &#8220;Anonymous&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong>When external collaborators work on a project and leave comments, they will be displayed as &#8220;Anonymous&#8221; in Overleaf&#8217;s regular mode.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No cloud storage<br \/>\n<\/strong>There is no cloud storage as you use Overleaf on-premise via TU Darmstadt. It is advisable to export all projects from the pilot instance before switching to regular operation and import them again after logging into the production system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No connection to GitLab and GitHub<br \/>\n<\/strong>In regular operation of Overleaf, it is not possible to connect directly to GitLab and GitHub. This may be relevant for users who need integration with these platforms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00549f;\">Attention!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Users who are already using Overleaf in pilot mode should export their projects from the pilot instance before switching to production mode. After the first logon to the production system, these projects must then be imported again. Detailed instructions on how to export and import projects can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/de.overleaf.com\/learn\/how-to\/Exporting_your_work_from_Overleaf\">Overleaf website<\/a>. Please note that the export must be completed by April 30, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>It is also advisable to ensure that the current contact email address is stored in the <a href=\"https:\/\/help.itc.rwth-aachen.de\/en\/service\/rhb2fhkpjhb7\/article\/05e8ebbe0121433e9efa4c8114f3622a\/\">Selfservice<\/a> before logging into the production system. This ensures that users can receive all relevant information and updates about the Overleaf service.
