In this post, we take a detailed look at the highlights that made the year an unforgettable chapter in the history of the IT Center.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00549f;\"><strong>Events and Important Collaborations<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In February, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/03\/06\/das-war-die-softwaretechnik-messe-2023-in-aachen\/\">Software Technology Fair 2023<\/a> took place on-site at the IT Center, where the aspiring mathematical-technical software developers (MATSE) from the dual study program &#8220;Applied Mathematics and Computer Science&#8221; at FH Aachen presented their projects.<\/p>\n<p>Next up were two outstanding events in March: firstly, the IT Center had the pleasure of hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/04\/12\/hpc-events-das-war-die-ppces-2023\/\">PPCES2023<\/a> in Berlin. Secondly, the international congress trade fair for innovative customer dialog <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/03\/24\/call-center-world-in-berlin\/\">Call Center World<\/a> took place in Berlin, which was attended by IT Center employees.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the first <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/07\/21\/dasi-day\/\">DaSi Day<\/a> took place as onsite meeting at the IT Center, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/08\/02\/aci-expertenrunde-2\/\">ACI expert meeting<\/a> in Ehingen by the Danube. The <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/07\/24\/it-center-auf-reisen\/\">&#8220;Customer Advisory Council&#8221;<\/a>, or CAC for short, of Dell in Dublin also took place. Our colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itc.rwth-aachen.de\/cms\/it-center\/it-center\/profil\/team\/~epvp\/mitarbeiter-campus-\/?gguid=0x4646A589C8A4C64C91341CDE14915026&amp;allou=1&amp;lidx=1\">Peter Watzlawik<\/a> went there on behalf of the IT Center and the Group Service and Communication.<\/p>\n<p>In September, it got autumnal with the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/12\/01\/zki-herbsttagung-2023\/\">ZKI Autumn Conference<\/a> in Dresden. The IT Center was not only represented there by participants, but also by the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itc.rwth-aachen.de\/cms\/it-center\/it-center\/profil\/team\/~epvp\/mitarbeiter-campus-\/?gguid=0xDEDCAC61E18D0B42898AB8F2F72AB51D&amp;allou=1&amp;lidx=1\">Dr. Thomas Eifert<\/a>, who gave a presentation on the development of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/datensicherung.dh.nrw\/en\/\">datensicherung.nrw<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The IT Center was also represented at the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/10\/04\/be-future-messe-fuer-jugendliche\/\">Be Future fair<\/a> for young people to provide information about the dual study course <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itc.rwth-aachen.de\/cms\/it-center\/karriere\/matse-ausbildung\/~letj\/ueber-matse\/?lidx=1\">MATSE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/12\/11\/supercomputing23\/\">SC2023<\/a>, the largest international conference in the field of high-performance computing research in Denver the IT Center was also represented by six participants from the HPC group.<\/p>\n<p>On November 14, around 80 people active in and interested in RDM also came together for the highly successful <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/forschungsdaten\/en\/2023\/11\/30\/nachbericht-tag-der-forschungsdaten-2023-nachmittagsprogramm\/\">Research Data Day 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of these events, the IT Center was also actively involved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/11\/24\/westai\/\">WestAI<\/a> project. This initiative aims to promote the spread of internationally competitive AI solutions in Germany and NRW.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00549f;\"><strong>Changes<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The year 2023 was also characterized by significant changes that had a lasting impact on the working environment and services of the IT Center at RWTH Aachen University.<\/p>\n<p>The year began with a major step for the Datensicherung.nrw project with the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/01\/20\/alles-hat-ein-ende-auch-das-tsm-backup\/\">end of the TSM backup system<\/a>. Since 17.01.2023, the old TSM backup system is only available in &#8220;read only&#8221; mode. Backups are now only performed via the new <a href=\"https:\/\/help.itc.rwth-aachen.de\/service\/t4ctl3msqrmt\/article\/0c39665e06364621bd17be42d1890a06\/\">Commvault backup system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Several important changes followed in March, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/03\/08\/abschaltung-des-it-shops\/\">shutdown of the IT store<\/a>. The corresponding services are still available, but the ordering process has changed fundamentally. RWTHmoodle received an update with the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/01\/30\/moodle-4-1\/\">upgrade to Moodle 4.1<\/a> and the operating system of the CLAIX high-performance computer was updated to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/03\/29\/rocky8\/\">Rocky Linux 8.7<\/a> to ensure performance and security. The <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/03\/15\/umbenennung\/\">renaming of RWTH Services to RWTH-E-Mail and L2P to RWTH Collaboration<\/a> also reflects the continuous adaptation to the needs of users, with a clear focus on effective communication and collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>The platform for research data management, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/04\/17\/coscine-regelbetrieb\/\">Coscine, successfully went live<\/a> &#8211; an important step towards efficient data management and research support. The new <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/05\/11\/das-druckservice-portal-ist-online\/\">print service portal<\/a> significantly simplified the submission of print jobs and improved usability for users.<\/p>\n<p>In summer 2023, the introduction of a new <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/07\/14\/key-visual\/\">key visual<\/a> marked an important milestone in the area of marketing.<\/p>\n<p>We said goodbye to the CAS Campus web phonebook. This was replaced by the new <a href=\"https:\/\/rwthcontacts.rwth-aachen.de\/\">RWTHcontacts<\/a> directory for RWTH and <a href=\"https:\/\/uka.rwthcontacts.rwth-aachen.de\/\">UKAcontacts<\/a> for the Uniklinik.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/10\/06\/erweiterungen-rwthonline\/\">Two extensions to RWTHonline<\/a> (RWTH Print and RWTH DivA) optimized the platforms over the course of the year in order to meet increasing requirements.<\/p>\n<p>In September, extensive maintenance work was carried out on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/09\/11\/tickettool-info-teil-3-anstehendes-upgrade\/\">ticket tool<\/a>, during which two upgrades were installed to implement functional innovations. These improvements help to provide users with more efficient and powerful ticket management.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of November, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/11\/02\/willkommen-webex\/\">Webex platform<\/a> was activated across RWTH, enabling comprehensive integration of Webex as a communication tool.<\/p>\n<p>The year was rounded off with the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/12\/15\/sharepoint-migration\/\">SharePoint migration<\/a>, during which the SharePoint Shared Services service of the IT Center was updated to a new version. This update ensures that users can benefit from the latest features and improvements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00549f;\"><strong>Festivities<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The return of in-person events made it possible to celebrate festivities such as the IT Center <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/12\/22\/die-it-center-weihnachtsfeier-2023\/\">Christmas party<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/09\/01\/it-center-sommerfest-2023\/\">summer party<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/05\/10\/betriebsausflug-2023\/\">company excursion<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/02\/24\/karnevalsfeier-it-center\/\">carnival party<\/a> on Fat Thursday and the traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/10\/13\/it-center-oktoberfest-2023\/\">Oktoberfest<\/a>. All of these events proved to be complete successes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #00549f;\"><strong>Reasons to Celebrate<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The year 2023 also offered many opportunities to celebrate and be proud.<\/p>\n<p>Four trainees completed their training in 2023 with the grading &#8220;very good&#8221;. All four were honored by the Aachen Chamber of Industry and Commerce for their excellent results as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/11\/27\/azubi-besten-ehrung-2023\/\">best trainee award<\/a>. At the same time, the IT Center welcomed 11 new trainees in 2023. Our DiMa apprentice, Yasin Kalem, went to Malta for five weeks for an <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/11\/29\/auslandspraktikum-auf-malta\/\">internship abroad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In February, our omnichannel system celebrated its <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/02\/03\/zwei-jahre-omnichannel\/\">two-year anniversary<\/a> and in March, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/03\/16\/1000-blogbeitrag\/\">1000th post<\/a> was published here on the IT Center&#8217;s blog. The proud record of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/07\/31\/3-jahre-it-center-help\/\">three years of IT Center Help<\/a> also underlines the continuity and relevance of this portal.<\/p>\n<p>The high appreciation for the IT Center&#8217;s commitment to a family-friendly working environment was honored in 2023 with the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/04\/25\/famose-familienfreundlichkeit-am-it-center\/\">RWTH &#8220;Famos f\u00fcr Familie&#8221; award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the IT Center also took part in in the tenth anniversary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/09\/29\/bei-uns-stimmt-nicht-nur-die-rechenzeit-firmenlauf-2023\/\">Aachen company run<\/a> with a team of eight (in new orange team shirts). These results were also impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Significant steps were taken internally, including the introduction of a new quality management system and successful <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/10\/11\/zertifizierung-des-qualitaetsmanagementsystems\/\">initial ISO 9001 certification<\/a> in the Networks department.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, we also celebrated the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/11\/15\/25-jaehriges-bestehen-der-vr-gruppe\/\">25th anniversary of the VR Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>External recognition came in the form of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rwth-aachen.de\/itc\/en\/2023\/11\/03\/best-paper-award-fuer-dr-tim-weissker-und-dr-daniel-zielasko\/\">Best Paper Award<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itc.rwth-aachen.de\/cms\/it-center\/it-center\/profil\/team\/~epvp\/mitarbeiter-campus-\/?gguid=0x88CEA631D8E8D84DA8AF85DA326E8873&amp;allou=1&amp;lidx=1\">Dr. Tim Wei\u00dfker<\/a> and Dr. Daniel Zielasko at the 29th ACM Symposium on Virtual Reality Software and Technology.
