The event was organized by TH Rosenheim with the support of the association “Moodle at Universities e. V.” Approximately 150 participants from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland gathered in the Upper Bavarian city. This year’s event was hosted by Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences.

The goal of the meeting was to work together on the further development of digital teaching. This goal was reflected both in the 31 sessions and in the informal exchanges, such as during shared meals or a brewery tour.

Course Templates: Developments and Lessons Learned from the Pilot Implementation

RWTH was also represented with its own session. Valentin Koser from the Center for Teaching and Learning Services (CLS) presented the developments and experiences from the pilot phase regarding the course templates. The focus was on both the process of creating the templates and initial insights from their use to date. The presentation generated great interest among the participants and led to initial plans for further collaboration.

Among other things, the presentation demonstrated how the course templates are developed: The results of the annual Moodle user survey, as well as surveys conducted within the student councils, served as the basis for the templates. Based on this, an analysis was then conducted to determine what requirements faculty and students have for a learning space and which functions are prioritized.

The surveys show that faculty members primarily want flexible templates that can be adapted to individual needs. At the same time, it is important to them to enable multimedia and interactive learning. These requirements largely align with students’ expectations. Furthermore, both groups place great value on clearly structured learning spaces.

Based on these findings, course templates were created over several development phases and have been tested since the summer semester of 2025 as part of a pilot phase.

Plugin Working Group

Within the association, so-called working groups are formed. These bring together subject-matter experts from member universities to exchange experiences, consolidate requirements, and collaboratively advance the further development of Moodle and digital teaching. The topics covered are diverse. Among the various working groups, for example, is the Plugins Working Group, which focuses on the development, maintenance, and integration of extensions for Moodle. Harald Schnurbusch, Head of the Learning Platforms, Evaluation, Assessment & Analytics (LEA) Department at CLS, serves as the spokesperson for the Plugins Working Group and reported on the group’s current progress.

Source: Felix Huber, TH Rosenheim

Collaboration within the working group aims, among other things, to facilitate jointly funded developments and to promote more efficient development processes overall. Currently, the so-called Plugin Workshop is working on an overview of recommended plugins, which is intended to serve as a decision-making aid for universities. The goal is to create transparency and make it easier to select suitable plugins.

The recommendations are based on various criteria such as prevalence in the D-A-CH area, functionality, reliability, supported Moodle versions, regular maintenance, available documentation, as well as aspects such as GDPR compliance and accessibility. At the same time, the focus is on how universities can cooperate more closely—for example, by pooling resources, aligning common needs, or coordinating the use of external service providers. This approach is intended to reduce development efforts and avoid duplicate development.

Further topics

In addition to these key topics, numerous other subjects were addressed. For example, artificial intelligence (AI) featured in several sessions, particularly with regard to its use in teaching. Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences, for instance, is currently investigating how data from learning analytics can be used to train AI. Other approaches focus on analyzing students’ learning behavior.

In addition, the sessions provided opportunities to exchange experiences and showcase new and existing plugins, such as BookIt for exam registration or a plugin for managing the user lifecycle.

The next university meeting will take place next year in North Rhine-Westphalia. The host university will be TU Dortmund.

Responsible for the content of this article are Verena Grouls and Stéphanie Bauens.

{"c2c_always_allow_admin_comments":false

308
89,87
post-23955","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-events-jubilaen-erfolge","tag-moodle","tag-rwthmoodle
["GET
