However, not everyone is able to use digital services equally. This is precisely where the issue of digital accessibility comes into play. An important occasion to raise awareness of this issue is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), which takes place this year on May 21, 2026.

What Does Digital Accessibility Mean?

Digital accessibility means that websites, applications, and digital content are designed so that they can be used by everyone, regardless of physical or cognitive limitations. This includes, for example:

Comprehensible and clearly structured content

Sufficient color contrast

Alternative text for images

Captions for videos

Usability without a mouse (for example, via keyboard)

The goal is to design digital offerings so that they are accessible and usable by as many people as possible. More than one billion people worldwide live with disabilities, and for them, accessibility is not an extra feature, but a prerequisite for participation.

Why Is Accessibility Important?

Accessibility is more than a technical issue; it is a matter of inclusion and equal opportunity. It plays a central role, especially in the higher education context:

Students should have access to learning materials regardless of any limitations

Faculty should be able to design content to be as inclusive as possible

Staff should be able to use digital tools without barriers

At the same time, all users benefit from accessible offerings: clear structures, good readability, and intuitive operation improve overall user-friendliness.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)

Global Accessibility Awareness Day takes place every year on the third Thursday in May. In North Rhine-Westphalia, GAAD is jointly organized by the digital accessibility competence centers Barrierefreiheit.nrw, ILIAS.nrw, and Moodle.NRW.

Workshops and Events

A diverse program of workshops will be offered around GAAD 2026.
