The best guess wins. But did you know that almost half of the goals are scored by chance?<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs-koeln.de\/english\/\">German Sport University Cologne<\/a> have looked at the goals scored in all English Premier League matches from 2012\/2013 to 2018\/2019 and analyzed which ones happened by chance. These were, for example, goals scored from a distance or deflected into the goal by crossbars, posts or teammates. Researchers also counted own goals among them.\u00a0 According to the analysis, 46 percent of the goals were scored by chance. Weaker teams score more accidental goals &#8211; presumably, because strong teams play more efficiently and tactically. In addition, the percentage of accidental goals decreases slightly from 2012 to 2019. One of the ways the researchers explain this is that professional soccer is placing more and more emphasis on data analytics. Teams have thus presumably developed a more systemantic style.<\/p>\n<p>At RWTH Aachen University, too, large amounts of data are analyzed and calculated every day for scientific and research purposes.
