The general perception of mathematics is usually strongly connected to schools and universities. People think about courses, black boards and researchers brooding over complex problems. This is why it is of highest importance to show that mathematics is so much more. It not only accompanies us in daily life and nature but is applied on a regular basis in companies.<\/p>\n

This is why the just recently founded SIAM Student Chapter at RWTH Aachen University had its first major event:<\/p>\n

INDUSTRY MEETS MATHEMATICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Company representatives talked about math-related task they face in their companies and how maths is integrated in their daily work.<\/p>\n

Three companies followed the call:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. the European Space Agency ESA<\/strong>,<\/li>\n
  2. the financial and risk management consultancy d-fine Group<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n
  3. the ESI Group<\/strong>, which provides virtual prototyping software.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In addition, two Ph.D. students of the SIAM Student Chapter in Aachen gave short presentations on their research. Besides members of the SIAM Student Chapter, a lot of Masters and Ph.D. students with background in mathematics, engineering and computer science attended the talks and enjoyed coffee and conversation during the breaks.
    \nAt the Get-together after the event\u00a0with snacks and drinks, students had the opportunities to talk to the industry representatives, make first contact and ask questions in a relaxed atmosphere. A dinner joined by industry representatives and SIAM Student Chapter members completed a very successful day.<\/p>\n
