Exploring the Latest Developments at the Textile Recycling Expo in Brussels

At the Textile Recycling Expo in Brussels on 25 June 2026, our researcher Lena Schmitz explored the latest developments in textile recycling and the circular economy. The event focused on innovative recycling processes, sustainable materials, and emerging technologies for textile processing and recycling.
Discussions with industry partners, research institutions, and other stakeholders provided valuable insights for our current and future research and development activities. The knowledge gained will help us identify new opportunities to unlock the potential of underutilized textile value streams and support the development of more sustainable circular solutions.

PhD Completed with Distinction: Dr. Nils Münstermann

We congratulate Dr. Nils Münstermann on the successful completion of his PhD, which he passed with distinction (summa cum laude).
In his dissertation entitled “Bio-Based Chitosan Interpolyelectrolyte Complexes for the Coating and Bonding of Wood-Based Materials”, he investigated chitosan itaconate as a fully bio-based and multifunctional material system. The developed coating and adhesive systems open up new possibilities for improving the water resistance, UV protection and fire performance of wood-based materials and combine the use of renewable raw materials with application-oriented solutions for the construction and wood industries.
We are delighted that Dr. Nils Münstermann will remain at the institute as a research group leader and wish him every success in his future scientific work.

New PhD Student

We have welcomed Lena Schmitz to the bio-based building materials department in July. In her dissertation, she is investigating the properties and potential applications of the fibre protein keratin, which is obtained from sheep’s wool, feathers, hair and hooves, among other things. She is trying to recycle these waste products sensibly and research environmentally friendly, resource-saving and sustainable materials for the construction industry. We wish her every success with her research and welcome her to the working group.

Since July, we have welcomed Paul Marten to the bio-based building materials department. As part of his dissertation, he is working on the derivatisation of chitosan and its application, including as an additive for PLA and as an adhesive or primer for wood/PMMA composite systems or wood laminates, for example. The aim of his research is to develop bio-based, sustainable and biodegradable systems with outstanding physical properties, while avoiding petrochemical substances as far as possible. We wish him every success in his research and welcome him to the working group.

Fabian Weitenhagen joined our team in the field of bio-based building materials in December. He is continuing his research into bio-based polycondensation resins and is building on the results of previous work.
