FAIR Digital Objects in Coscine

October 31st, 2025 | by

FAIR Digital Objects, or FDOs for short, are digital objects that are globally uniquely identified by a persistent identifier and are closely linked to metadata. FDOs were already available in Coscine, but they are now also visible in the web interface. Coscine assigns a handle-based ePIC-PID and a Kernel Information Profile to each project and resource. The FDO information can be displayed by resolving the PID of a project or resource. For more information, please refer to our documentation [4].

Updates on Migration to DataStorage.nrw

October 31st, 2025 | by

To date, around 1.5 PB of the total 2.5 PB of research data has been successfully migrated. The Coscine project with the largest storage space to date is currently undergoing migration. The project owners of the largest Coscine projects have already been contacted individually to agree on a suitable time for the migration. We currently expect the migration to be completed by the end of the year at the latest. Further information on the process can be found in our documentation.

Updates on Migration to DataStorage.nrw

October 1st, 2025 | by

The migration of all Coscine projects has been ongoing since the beginning of July 2025: The previous storage system, Research Data Storage (RDS), is being completely replaced by Datastorage.nrw. Step by step, all projects are therefore being transferred to the new infrastructure.

Around 1380 projects have already been migrated – that’s about 1 PB of the total planned 2.5 PB. Project owners with particularly large amounts of data were contacted directly to arrange individual dates for the migration.

The speed of the transfer varies depending on the project and depends, among other things, on the number of resources and the quantity and size of the files contained.

We will provide regular updates on further progress.
