Have you ever had a problem of identifying the sender of an e-mail sent from an @rwth-aachen.de e-mail address?

Such problem may have different reasons. One of them is, for example, an unintended misconfiguration of the mail client. This situation may be annoying especially when you as a recipient have no possibility to answer the sender as you do not have the right e-mail address. But you do not have to worry about this anymore. Pleasant changes are already on their way!

On August, 2016 the central mail server will be reconfigured so that only messages are sent when the authenticated sender has permission to use this sender address. Please keep in mind: To make sure that the sender is really the owner of the used sender address, further protective measurements are necessary. If the receiver should be able to verify the authenticity of the messages, signed messages must be sent. For this purpose, a corresponding personal S/MIME certificate is necessary. To get more information on this topic please read our IT Center Help page.

Are your e-mails delivered under ab123456@rwth-aachen.de as a sender address instead of firstname.lastname@rwth-aachen.de and you do not know how to change this misconfiguration and you use Outlook or Thunderbird?
Via Outlook please choose: Control-Panel–>E-Mail (32-Bit)–>E-Mail-Account
Via Thunderbird please choose: Settings–>Account-Settings–>Adjust
Choose the account you want to change and click “Change”. Replace you current address by the correct on
(Firstname.Lastname@rwth-aachen.de)
The following page of IT Center Help contains illustrated step-by-step descriptions which will help you to configure different mail programs in a correct way.
