Workshop of the State Initiatives for Federated Identity Management

On November 12 and 13, 2025, the biannual workshop of the state initiatives for federated identity management (IDM) took place at the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University. This year’s meeting was organized by the staff of the IDM.nrw project, which supports universities in North Rhine-Westphalia on their way to a state-wide, federated identity management system.

Representatives from Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, as well as from the German National Research and Education Network (DFN), came to Aachen to exchange experiences, discuss challenges, and initiate joint developments.

MoodleCafé in the 2025/26 Winter Semester

In the current winter semester, the Center for Teaching and Learning Services (CLS) is once again inviting participants to the digital exchange format MoodleCafé. MoodleCafé offers teachers and teaching assistants at RWTH Aachen University the opportunity to gain insights into successful teaching practices and to contribute their own questions or experiences.

This semester, the event series focuses on the topic “Best Practice in RWTHmoodle – Structured, visually clear, and didactically diverse course rooms”. The aim is to highlight the diverse design options offered by RWTHmoodle and discuss practical examples. Teachers from various disciplines will present their Moodle course rooms and show how structure, didactics, and design interact to optimally support learning processes.

IT-SAD: IT-Security Awareness Days 2025

From November 3 to November 14, 2025, the IT Security Awareness Days will take place for the tenth time. During these two weeks, a total of 18 online lectures on the topic of IT security will be held. These are organized by various universities.

The following institutions are involved (although not always with their own presentations): TU Braunschweig, TU Darmstadt, TU Dresden, University of Hildesheim, KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, University of Göttingen/GWDG, University of Marburg, University of Osnabrück, Leuphana University Lüneburg, University of Duisburg-Essen, University of Cologne, and Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences.

SocialHub PopUp Event in Munich

To manage social media channels efficiently, the IT Center’s marketing team relies on the SocialHub management tool. This allows us to maintain an overview and optimize our online presence. Twice a year, SocialHub invites its customers to its pop-up event.

Not only are new features for the social media management tool presented here, but exciting insights into other companies are also given and interesting guest lectures are held.

KI:connect.nrw – On the Path to 350,000 Users

In our first post, we introduced the launch of the KI:connect​.nrw project. The aim of the project is to provide universities in NRW with a privacy-compliant and customizable way of using generative AI via the central webinterface of KI:connect. In the meantime, there has been significant progress: The following five universities are now successfully connected and are actively using KI:connect:

  • FernUniversität in Hagen
  • Fachhochschule Aachen
  • Hochschule Ruhr West
  • RWTH Aachen University
  • Technische Hochschule Köln

This means that KI:connect is now available to more than 170,000 students and staff in the fields of study, teaching, and research.

The RWTH IT Center at the 12th Aachen Company Run

The IT Center of RWTH Aachen University was once again represented at this year’s event. On Friday 19 September 2025, a total of 7,523 runners from 518 companies took part in the race. As usual, the sporting event took place around Pascalstraße in Aachen-Oberforstbach.

Technical Background to the X-Win Conversion

On June 10, 2025, we successfully converted RWTH’s network connection to the German science network (X-WiN) to a new generation of routers. You can also read more information in the blog post. These important components of the network infrastructure were replaced with more powerful and energy-efficient devices.
