Artificial intelligence is developing rapidly at universities in North Rhine-Westphalia. To ensure that they are well positioned in the long term, common technical foundations and responsible solutions are needed.

A new paper by Digitale Hochschule NRW (DH.NRW) describes precisely this approach. It shows how basic AI services can be established for all universities in North Rhine-Westphalia.

What the DH.NRW Paper Is About

The paper proposes that universities should develop AI infrastructure and AI services jointly rather than individually. By sharing resources, models, and experiences, a stable, secure, and usable cross-university network should be created. A distributed structure is particularly recommended: several universities working together to create a common basis for AI applications.

The Role of the IT Center in this Network

In the KI:connect.nrw project, the IT Center is actively involved in setting up basic AI services in collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning Services. The IT Center’s focus is on developing and providing generative AI systems and on providing technical support to participating universities during rollout and technical implementation.

RWTH is thus providing a state-wide AI infrastructure that gives all universities in North Rhine-Westphalia data protection-compliant and individually configurable access to generative AI. This will result in long-term benefits and a wide range of applications for teachers, researchers, employees, and students.

Looking Forward

The DH.NRW paper provides important impetus for joint basic AI provision in North Rhine-Westphalia. Many technical and organizational details will be further elaborated in the coming months. In our blog post Towards the Future with AI, we have already reported extensively on AI activities at RWTH Aachen University.
