In recent years, the RWTH partner procedure has helped external persons with tasks at RWTH to gain access to RWTH’s IT services.

This process is now being changed: The partner procedure is being replaced by the role “Angehörige Organisationseinheit”. Like all other roles, this role is assigned by the role administrators of the individual chairs, institutes, and facilities.

The Partner Manager associated with the Partner Procedure will be deactivated on September 1, 2025. All coupons and authorizations issued by the Partner Manager will also expire on this date at the latest.

The good news?

You can now make the switch without any hassle. Find out how in the text.

A new service is now available to employees and students in pilot operation: git.nrw!

The associated git.nrw project was launched to provide a central platform to facilitate the exchange of code and ideas between developers, students, and teachers. The aim of the project is to provide a shared central GitLab instance for all universities in North Rhine-Westphalia to facilitate cross-institutional work.

The technical requirements have now been met to gradually open up the instance. RWTH is one of the first universities in North Rhine-Westphalia to be allowed to use the platform. Other universities will be connected step by step.

Find out what the git.nrw service can do and how you can use it for your everyday tasks in the blog post.

Basics at RWTH: Using the VPN

At RWTH Aachen University, the Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides an important and secure connection to the university network. This connection is secured by encryption protocols such as TLS. VPN ensures that all data traffic – either to the RWTH network or, depending on the configuration, also to the Internet – is routed via a so-called “tunnel”. This tunnel protects the data on its way between your end device and the VPN server, where it is then integrated into the RWTH network. In the “Full Tunnel”, for example, requests from your device for external services appear with an IP address of RWTH Aachen University. In this article, we explain how you can set up and use the RWTH VPN service.
