aiXcelerate 2021 – I/O and Machine Learning in Spotlight

aiXcelerate is an annual tuning workshop for HPC users. It comprises lectures that are open for everyone, and hands-on parts where registered groups apply the learnt concepts to their own codes. Every year, we focus on different hot topics. This year, on December 6th to 9th, aiXcelerate focused on performance tuning for I/O-intensive workloads and machine-learning applications. Due to the ongoing pandemic, aiXcelerate took place in an online format. Presentations were done live via Zoom and questions and discussions were fostered using a dedicated Slack channel. We attracted more than 20 participants every day.

Podcasts are all the rage – they come in all variations and lengths, short or long, and on all kinds of topics. Whether on the road in the car, on the train, on foot or at home. In short or long episodes, we get news, background information or a casual chat or two quite simply on the ear in between. This is practical for being up to date on topics that interest us.

The Metadata Form – Migrate Archive Nodes via Metadata

We know it too well ourselves from moves of all kinds: if we know what is contained in the boxes, it is much easier for us to decide whether we still want to keep certain contents or whether we can say goodbye to them. For this reason, we at least write on the box what is included and where it belongs.

The same goes for data that we want to archive, for example. We don’t have boxes available, but we can “label” the nodes to be archived with metadata. To do this, the appropriate node contacts receive a dedicated link to a metadata form about what exactly belongs to an archive node. What this is all about, you can read in this article.

Our everyday life is closely accompanied by the internet. We communicate with our peers on the net, share memories on social media, we shop online, search for answers to various questions in forums and much more. All these services usually require a login via username and password. With intensive use of various online services, it is sometimes easy to lose track of everything. And soon there will be two! The Christmas decorations have been taken out and put up. The first doors of the Advent calendar have been opened. One becomes two: Goodbye and auf Wiedersehen c6k-rog…Welcome n7ks!

Now it’s official: The c6k-rog was finally switched off from the network at the beginning of November 2021 and is now in a well-deserved retirement. The router, which was the main distributor for all institutes of the RWTH Aachen in the city centre for more than 14 years and routed the entire network, will now be replaced by the two new core routers n7k-carl-1 and n7k-sw23-1.

This means that one router has been replaced by two new, more powerful routers, which will guarantee the IT infrastructure at RWTH Aachen University in the future. This changeover was accompanied by the Network Division of the IT Center which operates the communication infrastructures of RWTH Aachen University. Read the rest of this entry »
