Report of the NFDI-MatWerk Summer School 2024

This year’s NFDI-MatWerk Summer School took place from September 10 to 12, 2024 at the Leibniz-Institut für Werkstofforientierte Technologien (IWT) in Bremen. The offer was met with great interest. Katharina Grünwald from the RDM team at RWTH Aachen University also attended the Summer School. We have summarised our impressions in this report.
Review of Research Data Day 2024

“Into the data garden: Let your research bloom!” was the motto of last week’s nationwide Research Data Day (RDD) in North Rhine-Westphalia. This year’s RDD took place on November 12, 2024 and offered researchers and those interested in RDM an attractive range of information on the topic of Research Data Management (RDM). The aim of the event is to present current developments and services in the field of RDM, to increase the visibility of the topic and to strengthen networking within the community.

Let your research bloom! On the second Tuesday in November, the fourth “Research Data Day” will take place in North Rhine-Westphalia – a state-wide day of action on research data management. On November 12, 2024, everything will revolve around a blooming “data garden” in which Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University invite all researchers and those interested in RDM to Jülich for networking!
Participation in the MSE Congress 2024

The RDM team from RWTH Aachen University was represented at the International Congress on Materials Science and Engineering (MSE)! Well, at least partially: we were represented there by members of the Materials Science and Engineering Consortium of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI-MatWerk for short) of the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University. We have recorded our impressions of the MSE Congress in this article.
Young Academics Day 2024

The next Young Academics Day, or YAD for short, is just around the corner: once a year, the Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Young Academics, Prof. Sabine Brück-Dürkop, and the RWTH Center for Young Academics (CYA) invite all doctoral students and postdocs at RWTH to the Young Academics Day at the SuperC. The RDM team will also be represented with a Coscine and RDM booth on September 5, 2024. Meet our team at the “Marketplace of RWTH Services” for early career researchers.
Open Meeting of the RDM Network in June 2024

On June 12, 2024, the open meeting of the RDM network at RWTH Aachen University on the topic of “Publication – Open Access and Data Publication” took place online via Zoom again. After the last RDM network meeting, which took place as a face-to-face event at the University Library of RWTH Aachen University, the RDM team of RWTH Data Stewards invited doctoral students, postdocs and those interested in RDM to the virtual open meeting of the RDM.
FAIR Digital Objects and Their Significance for Research Data Management

In today’s research, the correct handling of data is of crucial importance. The amount of research data is growing exponentially, and with it the need to manage this data efficiently and sustainably. This is where the FAIR principles come into play: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-Usable. These principles provide a common basis for handling research data and make it possible not only to store data, but also to make it usable and accessible. FAIR Digital Objects (FDOs) are a concept that transfers these principles to the digital world.

The first two days of the FDM workshop have already been reported on the RDM blog. On the third day of the FDM workshop, everything revolved around the FDM tools LiaScript, Datalad and Coscine. A discussion round on the DKZ.2R data competence center was also part of the last day’s program. You can find out more about the details of the individual sessions in this article.

Research without digital data has long since become unthinkable. Many different tools and programs are sometimes used to collect, process and organize data. The programs differ not only due to different subject areas and data types, but also with regard to the respective phase within the research data life cycle: starting with data collection, through its cleansing and analytical processing, to the publication-ready output of the data including documentation.
