The RDM team at RWTH Aachen University offers a comprehensive training program on research data management (RDM). The program is aimed at researchers, data stewards, and anyone interested in the structured handling of research data or who would like to deepen their knowledge in this area. In this blog post, we provide an overview of the training courses scheduled for the second half of the year.
The New RDM III Label for Greater Clarity
New for this period is the RDM III label, which makes it easier to navigate and select suitable workshops and continuing education courses. Each event is marked with a label indicating the required prior knowledge.
RDM I: Getting Started with Self-Study Modules
Events labeled RDM I – online are self-study courses covering the fundamentals of RDM. For anyone who would like to get an overview first, our self-study modules are available on RWTHmoodle.
The courses are available in German or English and form the foundation for the advanced workshops. They cover key RDM concepts and provide an overview of RDM services and infrastructure at RWTH Aachen University.
The following courses are currently offered:
- Overview of Research Data Management (RDM I – online)
- Research Data Management – an Overview (RDM I – online) (in English only)
- Introduction to Version Control with Git and GitLab
- Getting Started with Git and GitLab (in English only)
- Git Scavenger Hunt – a scavenger hunt with Git
RDM II: In-Depth Workshops
The “RDM II – Modular” and “RDM II – Compact” courses offer in-depth coverage and hands-on practice on the content covered in the RDM I modules. Aside from a basic understanding of RDM and the RWTH’s RDM tools, no prior knowledge is required.
These courses cover selected topics and tools in a practical manner, supplemented by hands-on training and discussions with other participants as well as the RDM team.
The following workshops are scheduled for the second half of the year:
- RDM platform Coscine – more than free quota! (RDM II – modular) (in English only) on September 7, 2026
- eLabFTW – Digitalize your Documentation (RDM II – modular) (in English only) on October 15, 2026
- FAIRe Data through Publication (RDM II – modular) on November 4, 2026
- Management and Editing of Data Management Plans with RDMO (RDM II – modular) on November 19, 2026
RDM III: Events for Advanced Participants
For events labeled RDM III – advanced, participants must already possess the relevant tool knowledge as taught in the corresponding RDM II module (e.g., on Coscine or eLabFTW). These events are therefore intended for individuals who already have hands-on experience with the respective tool.
These events will be offered in the next half-year:
- Metadata Basics and Creating Metadata Profiles for Coscine (RDM III – advanced) (in English only) on September 14, 2026
- Automating (Meta)Data Transfer to Coscine (RDM III – advanced) (in English only) on October 1, 2026

Detailed course descriptions and registration options are available via the RWTH event database.
We look forward to your participation and an engaging discussion on the topic of research data management.
