FAIRplay in Practice – Base4NFDI
On the occasion of Research Data Day in North Rhine-Westphalia (TdF) on November 18, 2025, we would like to give you a preview of our “RDM Practice” and “RDM Services” arenas. These are worth venturing into on Research Data Management (RDM) Day. This article provides an overview of the poster contribution “Playing FAIR with Base4NFDI – Scoring Across Scientific Disciplines” by Base4NFDI. Join us on TdF, engage in dialogue with the contributors and enjoy networking opportunities with other RDM enthusiasts!
Second Base4NFDI User Conference
Following CoRDI 2025, Base4NFDI invites you to the second Base4NFDI User Conference (UC4B2025) in Aachen from 28 to 29 August 2025.
The aim of the event is to strengthen the exchange between base services, consortia and international experts on the development of joint NFDI infrastructures.
The conference will address issues relating to the technical and organisational implementation of base services in the NFDI and provide a forum for discussions on sustainable research data management, international cooperation and the practical implementation of services in the consortia.
The programme is divided into three parts:
- a Base4NFDI slot at CoRDI at RWTH C.A.R.L. (Claßenstraße 11, 52072 Aachen)
- a panel discussion with evening reception at Forum M (Buchkremerstraße 1-7, 52062 Aachen) and
- a focus day on basic services at the Werkzeugmaschinenlabor (WZL) (Steinbachstraße 19, 52074 Aachen).
The venues are accessible for people with disabilities. Participants who require assistance can contact the organisers directly.
Participation is free of charge. However, prior registration is required. Further information and registration details can be found on the event page.

Congratulations to the three basic service initiatives Jupyter4NFDI, DMP4NFDI and KGI4NFDI, which received approval for a one-year initialization phase from the consortium meeting of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in April 2024. DMP4NFDI is another basic service for consortia based at RWTH Aachen University.
Do You Already Know the PID Network Project?

In May, the virtual dialogue platform pid-network.de and the social media channels on Mastodon and Twitter went online to provide information on developments around the topic of persistent identifiers (PID). Behind this is the project PID Network Germany, which was launched in March and which we would like to introduce in our new blog post.

The sections are an important part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). In October 2021, the first four sections have already started their work. On March 22, the Scientific Senate approved the establishment of the fifth section: Industry Engagement (section-industry).
Work of Base4NFDI Already in Full Swing

At the beginning of March 2023, the funding of the consortia from the third round of calls for proposals has started. But Base4NFDI‘s work is already in full swing. The initiative supports and develops services that cannot be delivered NFDI-wide by individual consortia, but are needed by many. Applications for Base4NFDI funding – to initialize services, integrate services, and begin operations – will be available at least three times per year during the initial phase. The first round in 2023 is already in full swing.
The Series of Successes Continues – Funding for Consortia With RWTH Participation Approved
At the end of the year, there is not only something new to announce from the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), but also reason to rejoice for RWTH Aachen University. After we reported on the funding recommendation of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in July, the final decision on the future funded consortia of the 3rd round was made last month.
