Invitation to a lecture by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. med. Steffen Leonhardt, Head of the Chair of Medical Information Technology, Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering RWTH, on Thursday, November 27, 2025, 5:00-6:30 p.m. Admission is free. The lecture and subsequent discussion will take place via Zoom and will be available as a video later.
Wearables, such as smart watches, have become an integral part of today’s world. They are worn on the body and have a wide range of functions, from contactless payment and location tracking to medical monitoring. As a rule, they are connected contactlessly to other devices (such as smartphones, but also medication pumps and many sensors).
In an aging society, mobile data collection and the increasing integration of these devices into diagnostics and therapy are of paramount importance because they can be used in the home environment with greater coverage. The benefits for patients and the potential for cost reduction are obvious thanks to the early detection of emerging problems. At the same time, there is a conflict of objectives with data protection and quality assurance for apps in a regulated market.
Wearables are currently undergoing rapid and dynamic development. New sensors are being developed, and new functionalities are emerging through networking. The presentation outlines this development and highlights examples of its benefits.
