The sections are an important part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). In October 2021, the first four sections have already started their work. On March 22, the Scientific Senate approved the establishment of the fifth section: Industry Engagement (section-industry).
What do the Sections do?
Despite their different disciplines of origin, the individual NFDI consortia have many topics in common. This is exactly where the sections come in. They are legally dependent departments of the NFDI association that deal with topics that are relevant to all or several consortia. One example is the development of metadata standards and formats.
With the help of the sections, common cross-cutting issues are addressed across consortia. The sections work closely with the basic services consortium Base4NFDI and are therefore significantly involved in the development of the basic services.
New Section Coordinates Cooperation With Industry
Section-industry is dedicated to the overarching organisation of cooperation between industry and the NFDI consortia, basic services and other sections. This includes, among other things, the development of a joint exchange platform between industry and science, the identification and concretisation of overarching problem areas as well as the standardisation and simplification of forms of cooperation within the NFDI.
The coordinated cooperation with the business community will open up another additional benefit for society. In the economy, data is continuously collected in a similar way as in science. The methods and standards used there are of great importance for several scientific disciplines. But this also applies vice versa, because science also has data and methodological competencies that are in turn relevant for the economy.
In addition to the involvement of the business community in the section’s work, a continuous exchange with existing sections within the NFDI is also being strived for and established.
