“Meet, Share, Inspire, Care!”: Under this motto, the second edition of the German Open Science Festival was held at the ZB MED – Information Center and Life Sciences and at CECAD in Cologne on July 4 and 5, 2023. The RDM team of RWTH Aachen University did not want to miss this spectacle and paid a visit to the cathedral city on July 4. We have captured our impressions of this eventful day for you.
Here We Go
The Open Science Festival kicked off on July 4 with Dr. Benedikt Fecher’s keynote on the meaning of Open Science. He explained how the different meanings of open science come about. The program continued with an interesting panel discussion on Open Science from a global perspective with speakers from Ghana and Georgia, inviting discussion on how scientists and communities from different regions contribute to global knowledge communities and how researchers can learn from each other. Planned for the panel discussion was another participant from Guatemala, who unfortunately could not attend due to difficulties in applying for the visa. This was used as a practical example to illustrate that there is still a great need for improvement in the area of open science. The following Ignite Talks were met with great enthusiasm by our FDM team: Various topics were presented in just five minutes, and thus many new topics were brought up in a very short time. Among other things, the Ignite Talks addressed the pros and cons of the “Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz” and presented a practical way of linking GitHub and Zenodo.
Exciting Workshops in the Afternoon
The diverse program in the afternoon with various workshops, which conveyed content from practice, also ensured an exciting exchange and interesting discussions. For example, on the topic of “Managing the data landscape: A case for data stewardship”: In this workshop, the definition, job description and tasks of a data steward were discussed and the various areas were examined in more detail. The aim of the event was to bring together different perspectives of young researchers, data stewards, information professionals as well as people from an institutional point of view and to exchange experiences. Especially the exchange with already known contacts and making contact with new faces made the workshop a special experience for the RDM team.
The second workshop attended by the RDM team was a bit more technical. Under the motto “Researching in and with the Wikiverse”, exciting and informative insights were provided into various sites such as Wikidata, Wikisource, Wikipedia and digital tools such as Scholia. The service Scholia offers the creation of visual profiles on topics, people, organizations, etc., using the corresponding information from Wikidata. Workshop participants were able to get hands-on and try out the digital tools as well as edit in the Wikiverse.
It was an eventful day with many impressions and exciting new contacts, as well as enriching information about research data management in combination with Open Science – this is how the RDM team remembers the day in Cologne. We are already looking forward to the next time!
