In an increasingly digitalized world, the ability to understand and use data is crucial. In order to strengthen this essential competence among the German public at large and thus take a significant step toward actively shaping the digital future, the pioneering research project “Toolbox Data Literacy” (TBDK) was conceived.
The Toolbox Data Literacy (TBDK) Research Project
TBDK is a data literacy initiative launched on December 12, 2021. The main goal of the project is to provide a comprehensive continuing education and tool platform for basic data skills and thus make the data strategy of the German federal government more tangible. This research project is funded as part of the measure “Funding for the Design of the Digital Education Space” of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Launch of the Beta Version of the Education and Tool Platform for Data Literacy
On September 19, the TBDK research project set a milestone in the data literacy landscape in Germany with the launch of the beta version of its education and tool platform for data literacy. The platform is accessible to everyone and offers a wide range of features and course content.
With the beta launch, the TBDK team is seeking active feedback from its users in order to further improve the platform over the course of the project and adapt it even more to the needs of users, which includes the context of research data management.
What to Expect on the TBDK Platform?
Full Range of Courses for Improved Data Literacy
The platform offers a comprehensive selection of internal and external courses on the topic of Data Literacy. The internal courses are divided into different modules, chapters and lessons. In this way, individual learning progress can always be perfectly tracked.
The TBDK platform is characterized by a diverse interactive learning environment. Users are given the opportunity to access a wide range of multimedia resources, including high-quality texts, visually appealing images, PDF files, and videos. This multi-layered approach allows learners to interact on different levels and acquire their knowledge in a versatile and engaging way.
Programming environment
Another special feature of the platform is the integration of a freely accessible Jupyter notebook. This innovative programming environment gives users the opportunity to directly apply their acquired knowledge. The interactive nature of the Jupyter notebook allows users to immediately visualize the results they have achieved. Thus, it encourages learners to try out different approaches and creatively deepen their acquired knowledge.
Interactive Forum for the Data Community
The TBDK platform also hosts an interactive forum that serves as a central meeting point for insightful encounters and intensive knowledge exchange. In this forum, users can participate not only in public discussions and ask targeted questions, but also access forums specifically oriented towards course content. These subject-specific discussion forums promote knowledge transfer and contribute to the development of an active and engaged community.
Prospect
TBDK is more than just a platform – it is a signpost to a digitized future with data literacy as a key focus. With its wide range of courses, interactive programming environment, and engaging forum, TBDK provides the tools and the appropriate community to effectively promote data literacy. There are also some exciting developments already planned for the coming year 2024, which should make the platform even more interactive and practical.
