When people talk about research data management (RDM) today, many immediately think of metadata, repositories, or the FAIR principles. The fundamental idea behind it, however, is much older. Long before digital technologies existed, people faced the challenge of collecting and organizing knowledge and making it accessible to future generations.
The First Steps Toward Organizing Knowledge
An early example of the systematic handling of knowledge is the Library of Alexandria, which was founded in the 3rd century B.C. It is considered one of the world’s first public research libraries. In addition to collecting scrolls, organizing them also played a central role. Even back then, information was categorized and structured to make it easier to find. The first librarian of the Library of Alexandria was Zenodotus of Ephesus. His name inspired the name of the RDM platform Zenodo.
After the end of antiquity, knowledge was preserved primarily in monasteries. In the Middle Ages, these developed into important centers of education and literary culture. With the emergence of universities and municipal libraries, knowledge increasingly spread beyond ecclesiastical institutions. Books were precious commodities whose preservation and management required great care.
The Media Revolution of Printing
A decisive turning point was marked by Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of movable-type printing in the 15th century. For the first time, texts could be reproduced in large numbers. Knowledge spread more quickly and reached significantly more people than before.
However, as the availability of books increased, so did the volume of information. Libraries, educational institutions, and government agencies had to find new ways to catalog content and make it permanently accessible. The organization of knowledge thus became an increasingly important task.
From Managing Large Volumes of Information to the Computer
In the early modern period, increasingly standardized administrative and documentation structures emerged. Libraries developed more sophisticated classification systems, while government institutions had to manage growing information holdings.
By the 20th century at the latest, the available data volumes had become so large that new technical solutions were required. The development of computers made it possible for the first time to efficiently store, process, and analyze information. An important milestone was the Z3, developed by Konrad Zuse, which was unveiled in 1941 as the first functional programmable computer.
The Internet as the Foundation of Modern Data Infrastructures
With the development of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee in the late 1980s, a new era of information exchange began. Data could now be shared, linked, and made available worldwide in near real time.
Many of the foundations of today’s research data management build upon this development. Repositories, digital identifiers, and the FAIR principles ultimately pursue the same goal as the early libraries: to organize knowledge and data in such a way that they remain discoverable, accessible, and usable over the long term.
A Look Back to Inform Today’s Research
The history of research data management shows that the structured handling of knowledge is not an invention of the digital age. From the Library of Alexandria to medieval scriptoria to the Internet, researchers have repeatedly faced the same challenge: documenting and preserving information in a way that ensures it can be used in the future. Modern RDM concepts carry on this millennia-old tradition by leveraging the capabilities of digital technologies.
