data.ONE – Data Literacy Basic Course I

The ability to collect, evaluate, manage, analyze and interpret data appropriately and critically is indispensable in the 21st century. And it is precisely this key competence of data literacy that is the focus of the data.RWTH project. Since 2021, data literacy has been taught to students of all subjects in a multi-perspective and fundamental way as part of the data.RWTH program, which consists of online courses. In the following, we are pleased to present the first course data.ONE.

 

 

What is data.ONE – Data Literacy Basic Course I?

As part of the video-based data.ONE course, basic interdisciplinary data skills are developed and deepened using examples from everyday life and from various specialist areas. data.ONE combines a theoretical with an application-oriented perspective, including in the areas of data collection, data management, data analysis, drawing conclusions from data and data ethics.

What Content Is Taught?

data.ONE teaches knowledge, concepts and guidelines for action along the data lifecycle. This includes, among other things

  • The relevance of data and data literacy
  • Dealing with different data types and standards
  • Finding and collecting data
  • The analysis and visualization of data
  • Data management
  • Drawing conclusions from data
  • Data ethics

Who Is the Target Group?

Students of all subjects, especially those studying for a Bachelor’s degree.

Registration is possible via RWTHonline.

When Can You Take the Course?

Every semester.

Context: Why Is the Course Important? Why Should I Take It?

Data literacy is a so-called future skill that is essential in everyday life as well as in studies and work in order to deal competently and critically with the large amounts of data of all kinds that surround us and to make data-based decisions.

Preview: What Other Offers Will There Be in the Future?

The online course data.TWO builds on data.ONE. Here, the content is deepened and, in particular, topics relating to algorithm-based data processing and AI applications are taught in depth.

In addition to the basic courses, the course program also includes the video-based software propaedeutics data.PREP (currently R and Python).
