Research Data Management in Action: CoRDI 2025 at RWTH

From August 26 to 28, 2025, RWTH Aachen University will host the second Conference on Research Data Infrastructure (CoRDI). The event will bring together stakeholders from academia, infrastructure, and the community to discuss the current state and future of research data management (RDM).
The conference is organized by the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in close cooperation with RWTH. The venue is the C.A.R.L. lecture hall center, which offers modern facilities and a central location, providing ideal conditions for a lively conference atmosphere.
Second Advanced User Meeting of Coscine.nrw

On April 29, 2025, the second user meeting of Coscine.nrw took place. The event not only offered exciting insights into current developments in the research data management (RDM) platform, but was above all interactive. In a creative group work phase, participants jointly developed specific criteria for evaluating storage space requests—an important building block for the review process of the new DataStorage.nrw storage system.
NFDI-MatWerk Spring School 2025: A Dynamic Exchange on Research Data Management in Aachen
From April 8 to 10, 2025, RWTH Aachen University hosted the NFDI-MatWerk Spring School, bringing together 22 enthusiastic participants from all over Germany. This diverse group included PhD students, postdocs, and researchers who work with experimental and simulation data. Over three days, they immersed themselves in intensive sessions, hands-on workshops, and lively discussions about Research Data Management (RDM) in materials science and engineering.
Carpentries Python Workshop
The Software Carpentries Introduction to Python workshop on March 17 to 18, 2025, at the IT Center of the RWTH Aachen University. It was led by Jonathan Hartman from the Rhine-Ruhr Center for Scientific Data Literacy (DKZ.2R) and Catherine Gonzalez from the NFDI4Microbiota. This event was specifically designed for graduate students and researchers who are interested in learning Python.
E-Science-Days 2025: Concluding Impulses
The third and final day of the E-Science Days 2025 kicked off with an inspiring keynote by Prof. Dr. Niklas Boers on the topic of “Data-driven modeling of the Earth system”. The participants gained a comprehensive insight into data-driven modeling approaches for researching the Earth system. The keynote was moderated by Oliver Kohl-Frey.

2024 was another exciting year for research data management (RDM). At RWTH Aachen University and beyond, numerous events, new initiatives and exciting developments have further advanced RDM. It was a year full of innovations, challenges and inspiring encounters. Let’s take a look at the highlights of the past year!
Workshop: Large Language Models and the Future of Scientific Publishing – Register Now!

Digitalization and the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) are increasingly changing the world of scientific publishing. Large Language Models (LLMs), which open up new perspectives and possibilities for scientific communication, are a central topic in this change. How these technologies can shape the future of scientific publishing will be intensively discussed in the upcoming workshop on February 11, 2025 in Frankfurt am Main.
Participation in the MSE Congress 2024
The RDM team from RWTH Aachen University was represented at the International Congress on Materials Science and Engineering (MSE)! Well, at least partially: we were represented there by members of the Materials Science and Engineering Consortium of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI-MatWerk for short) of the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University. We have recorded our impressions of the MSE Congress in this article.
That Was the Young Academics Day 2024
On September 5, 2024, it was that time again: the RWTH Young Academics Day (YAD) for young academics took place in the SuperC of RWTH Aachen University. PhD students and postdocs at RWTH were invited to network, exchange ideas and reflect on their own career paths and decisions through inspiring lectures, as well as to be inspired by the services offered by RWTH. The RDM team from RWTH was also there to present the services of research data management (RDM) at the “marketplace”.
