Joint Changes to FP10 – What This Means For RDM

Europe is planning its tenth research framework program, FP10, for the years 2028 to 2034, and discussions about it have already begun. For researchers involved in research data management (RDM), it is worth taking a closer look. This is because the changes currently being proposed could influence how data is shared, managed, and funded in the future. With a budget of around €95.5 billion, Horizon Europe is the world’s largest research budget, which further underscores the importance of the program.
First RDM Network Meeting in 2026
On January 22, 2026, the RDM team welcomed the RDM community at RWTH Aachen University to the first RDM network meeting of the year. The monthly event takes place online or in person on the fourth Thursday of every month and offers anyone interested in RDM the opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss practical examples.
The January meeting focused on the presentation “Data Mesh for RDM in the Engineering Sciences” by Mario Moser from the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University. In his presentation, he provided exciting insights into his doctoral thesis topic and, as part of the NFDI4ING consortium, presented conceptual considerations and designs for the use of the data mesh approach in RDM in the engineering sciences.
RWTHtransparent 2026 – A Review
On January 30, 2026, as part of the “RWTHtransparent” event, RWTH Aachen University opened its doors to visitors once again, offering them a behind-the-scenes look at the university. The event showcased developments and successes from the past year and provided insights into planned projects. It allowed anyone interested to learn firsthand about current research and teaching initiatives.
RDM in North Rhine-Westphalia – Coscine Establishes Itself Statewide
The research data management platform Coscine is becoming increasingly important: as of January 2026, 13 universities have already signed contracts to use it. Coscine is thus laying the foundation for FAIR data storage at universities and offering researchers a practical solution.
RDM Training Program – Courses in the First Half of 2026
In the first half of 2026, the RDM team at RWTH Aachen University will once again be offering a comprehensive training program on research data management (RDM). The program is aimed at researchers, data stewards, and anyone else who is involved in the structured handling of research data or would like to deepen their knowledge in this area.
Online Access Begins: Data Access for Research Under the Digital Services Act

Online research begins with data. Since October 29, 2025, new opportunities have opened up for researchers in the EU with the entry into force of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the launch of the European Data Access Portal: For the first time, very large online platforms and search engines (VLOPs and VLOSEs) can be systematically investigated.
For projects in the field of research data management (RDM), this means that structured and legally compliant data can be directly incorporated into scientific work, whether for analyses, studies, or methodological developments. This access to data offers unique potential for researching how digital platforms work and better understanding the risks for users.
RDM Network Meeting in January 2026: Data Mesh in the Engineering Sciences
The first RDM network meeting of the year will take place online on January 22, 2026. We are particularly pleased to welcome Mario Moser from WZL / NFDI4Ing, who will give us exciting insights into research on data infrastructure in his presentation “Data Mesh for RDM in the Engineering Sciences.”
RDM Network Meeting in January 2026: Data Mesh in the Engineering Sciences
On January 22, 2026, the RDM Network at RWTH Aachen University cordially invites you to the first network meeting of 2026. The event will take place online via Zoom and will begin at 10am.
At this meeting, Mario Moser (WZL / NFDI4Ing) will present the concept of “Data Mesh for RDM in the Engineering Sciences.” The focus will be on how a data-oriented infrastructure can be designed in the engineering sciences to make it easier to share, access, and reuse data. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for interactive exchange with the community.
- Date: Thursday, January 22, 2026
- Time: 10am – 11:30am
- Location: Online (Zoom)
- Registration: via Zoom
The RDM network meeting is aimed at researchers, data stewards, those interested in RDM, and anyone involved in research data management.
Take advantage of this opportunity to gather new ideas for your research data management, network with colleagues, and ask experts questions directly. We look forward to a lively exchange and exciting discussions!
