On September 5, 2024, it was that time again: the RWTH Young Academics Day (YAD) for young academics took place in the SuperC of RWTH Aachen University. PhD students and postdocs at RWTH were invited to network, exchange ideas and reflect on their own career paths and decisions through inspiring lectures, as well as to be inspired by the services offered by RWTH. The RDM team from RWTH was also there to present the services of research data management (RDM) at the “marketplace”.

Science and AI: Insights Into Everyday Research

After all participants had arrived at the SuperC and helped themselves to a cool drink, the moderator Merle Becker began with a welcome address, followed by a greeting from Prof. Carsten Honerkamp, Dean of Faculty 1. In his speech, he emphasized the great impact of science, especially in today’s world of constant crises, and called for cooperative and humane interaction.

Afterwards, Rector Prof. Ulrich Rüdiger spoke about his personal development, decisions and experiences in his scientific career and answered questions from the audience. He advised young scientists to always take care of their own network and to explain to the general public what exactly a PhD student does in his or her scientific career.

After a short coffee break, Dr. Malte Persike’s keynote address on “The transformation of research through AI: A cautionary tale” began, providing fascinating insights into the world of ChatGPT. In his interactive presentation on the topic of AI, he also urged participants to be cautious about using AI in day-to-day research, for example, because it must be approved by supervisors.

“Care must also be taken when uploading copyrighted material,” Persike said, noting that the AI could, for example, generate a summary with a specific word count. After the last lecture, the managers of RWTH Services presented their offers to young scientists in a short pitch.

Ice Cream & RWTH Services

During the event, participants could enjoy delicious ice cream from Leana & Luise and get to know RWTH services at the marketplace. The RWTH RDM team presented its services in the field of research data management and the RDM platform “Coscine”, which could be explored with a crossword puzzle and an RDM quiz. The RDM team would like to thank all participants for the exciting discussions, informative exchange and valuable feedback!

This year’s Young Academics Day was once again a great success and provided an opportunity to get to know each other personally and to present the wide range of opportunities available to young academics.
