At the IT Center, everything is about technology – but what is behind it in detail?

This and much more was exactly what the new office management trainees of the RWTH Aachen University learned at the About IT module on 11 January 2021. Whether RWTHmoodle or IdentityManagement – employees and trainees very often have to deal with various IT services at RWTH Aachen University and the IT Center is the central point of contact for this.

IT module digitally this year

The About IT module has been held by the IT Center in cooperation with the so-called vocational training centers (BAZ) since 2015. Trainee Julia König, from the IT Center’s Service & Communication department, presented this, so that the exchange could take place in a relaxed atmosphere at eye level. It was also assisted by our colleague Martin Pieters, who has many years of experience and is particularly tech-savvy, thus making the module even more vivid.

Unfortunately, for given reasons, the module took place digitally via Microsoft Teams. For this reason, some of the “specials” that we usually look forward to the most were cancelled: for example, a guided tour of the machine hall and the Aix Cave.

The day in overview

However, we still tried to make the day together as exciting and interesting as possible: the morning started with the image film of the IT Center, so that the trainees got a first, visual impression. If you are also interested in this film, you are welcome to visit the IT Center Youtube channel. We also presented the most common points with the IT Center and introduced them to the trainees. For example, it is good to know how to manage your own data in Selfservice or how to use the RWTH-wide eduroam. Furthermore, we showed the trainees how to recognize SPAM and phishing e-mails and how important protective measures are.

Home office communication

In this special time of working in the home office, we all had to adjust a bit and use different new technical applications. For this reason, we made a small introduction to the program Microsoft Teams as well as Cisco Jabber, so that the newcomers in the home office are already informed about the latest communication channels and can work with them directly.

In order for the audience to become interactive during our lecture, we prepared some tasks in RWTHmoodle, where the new knowledge could be tested.

We hope that the day was exciting and informative for the trainees. We had a lot of fun. The About IT module in 2022 will hopefully take place again at our IT Center.
