On July 22, 2021, the non-profit association “Moodle an Hochschulen” was founded during a video conference between 29 universities. With this foundation, a representation of interests for the digital education platform Moodle was created.

RWTH Aachen University is one of the founding members of the association, which is based in Berlin. The associations main task will be to act as a contact and multiplier for the Moodle open-source learning management system in the German higher education sector. At the same time, the cooperation in the association also strengthens the open source idea behind Moodle. In the case of software, this means, among other things, sharing source codes, but also sharing experiences and values, as well as exchange within a community.

Moodle, on which the RWTHmoodle used at RWTH Aachen University is also based, already offers many possibilities. Content can be made available to students in various digital formats, independent of time and location. Communication among students and with teachers is promoted. And even exams are supported digitally. With the help of the association, not only is Moodle being further developed for university use, but networking and knowledge transfer are also being strengthened. Network meetings and expert panels already take place on a regular basis. These exchange formats, as well as the publication of best practices, contribute to digital sovereignty in the education sector.

RWTH Aachen University is represented within the association by Dr. Harald Schnurbusch, head of the Learning Platform Management (LPM) department at the Center for Teaching and Learning Services (CLS). Dr. Schnurbusch is also a member of the RWTHmoodle team at RWTH Aachen University, which consists of members of the CLS and the IT Center.
