No matter if we are at university, at work or in private, we are on the internet a lot using the browser. Over time, we accumulate a number of websites that we want to access from time to time.
And to avoid having to search for the pages from scratch every time, there is a practical tool: Bookmarks.
We all know them, but do we use them effectively?

Here we present a few useful tips on how you can use the bookmark manager properly and not lose the general overview.

The very first thing you need to do is to create the bookmarks. This is easily done by clicking on the heart or star symbol in or next to the input line of the browser.

Next you have to go to the bookmark manager. How you get to the bookmark manager on your browser depends on your browser:

  • For Firefox, you’ll find the bookmarks under the book icon.
  • In Chrome, the bookmark list can be found behind the three dots.
  • In Safari, you’ll find the bookmark manager behind the sidebar icon.

And on Edge, you’ll find your “Favorites” behind the star icon

Now that we’ve arrived at our bookmark manager, it’s time to organize our bookmarks.

What’s the best way to do that?

  • Customize names: Website links are often very long and not necessarily easy to read. It is therefore a good idea to give the individual bookmarks shorter and distinctive titles so that they can be found again quickly and easily.
  • Create folders: Even more clarity bring folders in the bookmark list. Here you can create categories, such as topics from the university, and sort your bookmarks into the appropriate folders.
  • The symbol list: Your favorite websites can be displayed in the icon list at the top. Folders can also be integrated here. So you can access them with one mouse click.

Keep the Overview

To avoid a chaos of outdated or duplicated bookmarks, it makes sense to regularly check and clean out your bookmarks.

In Firefox, the free add-on Bookmarks Organizer can help you with this. With it, you can have bookmarks checked automatically and select whether to check for broken bookmarks or duplicates.

With a well-organized and clear bookmark list, it’s much easier to work!
