The IT Center has been offering the fee-based SharePoint Shared Service for many years. The service addresses RWTH institutions and is a collaboration platform based on Microsoft SharePoint. It is operated on infrastructures in the IT Center. In addition, in-house developments are also created on this basis, which fall into the area of “process support for research and teaching”.
SharePoint has now been updated to a new version. We have summarized for you what this means and what has changed as a result.
Migration to SharePoint 2019
Last year, the SharePoint 2013 farm was updated to SharePoint 2019. In addition to the availability of the newer version, support for the Microsoft SharePoint 2013 software version used was discontinued by the manufacturer on April 30, 2023. The changeover was therefore necessary.
This was taken as an opportunity for an organizational restructuring within the service.
Previously, all SharePoint sites hosted at the IT Center were located on one SharePoint instance – a so-called farm. In the course of the update, the opportunity was taken to separate the sites thematically. Now the SharePoint Shared Services customer sites are on one farm and the IT Center’s own development sites are on another farm.
As a result, it is now possible to apply different guidelines for software provision and updates for both farms in order to better meet the specific requirements of both user groups.
All of this has now been achieved – and the SharePoint migration was successfully completed in November 2023.
New Farm, New Links
Due to the separation into different server farms, the links under which the Site Collections are accessible have changed.
But don’t worry, only one part at the beginning of the URL needs to be replaced. The SharePoint Shared Services customer pages replace the “sharepoint.ecampus” part with the word ” spass” – and the link is updated!
The situation is similar for in-house developments: “sharepoint.ecampus” is replaced by “coop”.
So that you can still find your pages easily and don’t have to bother with building links, information pages have been set up for all old links following the migration. These indicate the move and show you the new link. So simply open the old link and save the new link – for example in your browser’s bookmarks.
